The Douglas Archives

A collection of historical and genalogical records

Hi everyone,

I may have vaguely posed this question before but it's still without response - so any help would be welcome!

My great-grandfather (born in Rothesay, Isle of Bute, Scotland), went to sea at about the age of 14. he returned to Scotland age 40 as a qualified mechanical/ships engineer and started a family.

We know that he spent many years in the USA (possibly in and around Boston, Mass.) but we know very little of what he did there. Did he have another family? Do I have relatives who wonder what happened to their ancestor, etc, etc...?

I have family records etc. going back several generations before him, so if anyone has any info. I'd be delighted to hear from you.

John Douglas

P.S. No fortunes are at stake, so anyone trying to find a rich relative will have to look elsewhere!

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
