A collection of historical and genalogical records

Trying to find information on my Douglas Ancestry
Roderick Douglas born around 1732, He may be the son of Robert Douglas and Helen Rue.
Robert Douglas and Helen Rue married in 1727 Garvock.
Roderick Douglas married Marion Blaikie 5.6.1763 Edinburgh parish
Marion Blaikie was the daughter of Alexander Blaikie and Mary Carfrae/Carthrea/ae
On a wedding notice Rodetick douglas was a gentlemans servant at Tolbooth.
Marion's father was a weaver from Liberton and later was a Labourer at old Greyfriars.
Don't have any idea what a gentleman servant is at Tolbooth, I know tolbooth is a place.
Old greyfriars is s grave yard so would Alexander dig holes for graves?
Roderick and marion had Margaret Douglas in 25.3.1764 Liberton
She is the only child I have found for them.
Their daughter Margaret married a William Rutherford 22.6.1792 St Cuthberts, Edinburgh.
Margaret and William had my 3 times great grandmother Isabella Rutherford 1794 Edinburgh and died 1818 or 1819 after childbirth
Isabella married a Henry Porter.
Henry was a printer by trade and family sources say he owned the Edinburgh Times
was there such a paper?
Isabella and Henry had 2 children
Clement porter born 1816 Edinburgh died 1867 Kempsey, Australia, Convict.
Jean or jane born 1818 or 1819 this line is still in Scotland today and told me Isabella's mother was a Margaret douglas.
So can anyone help me with Roderick's family
I want to know more about my Douglas Hetitage and what I have down is what I have found out
Are all people with Douglas ancestry related to one another?

Garvock is in Kincardineshire.  There was a Lewis Douglas of Garvock, Esq. in about 1826, but I have not located any others. It was Graeme barony (or Graham), I think. It is not far from Glenbervie (See Douglases of Glenbervie).

A tolbooth or town house was the main municipal building of a Scottish burgh, from medieval times until the 19th century. The tolbooth usually provided a council meeting chamber, a court house and a jail. Do you know which tolbooth that would be?

Should that be 'gentleman's servant' do you think?  That would be a valet.

I have seen elsewhere that 'Isabella married Clement porter at St Cuthbert, Edinburgh'. I wondered if Mr Clement was a porter (profession)? But you suggest it was a surname.

I hope the above helps you along the way?

Just wondering if Garvock could be Garvald?  The latter is in East Lothian, not far from Edinburgh.

I think Roderick Douglas could have been in Liberton tolbooth.
Porter was defiantly a surname and not an occupation
The area could be Garvald but on Family search they have Garvock.
Did a search on Find my past to no Avail about Roderick Douglas.
Could Roderick have been born elsewhere?
If his mother was Helen Rue the surname Rue is not Scottish origin.
I did find a few Rues in scotland but no Helen.
Robert Douglas no idea.
Roderick would have been trained to be a valet?
Saw a TV program of men training to be valet's.
Need all the help I can get.
I even had a look at Scots people the website for Roderick's birth but nothing!
My brick wall.
Roderick is not a common name the only one I have found via the Douglases

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
