The Salamander in Douglas Heraldry

I have long wondered about the origin of the salamander that appears in Douglas heraldry and recalled that there was an article in the Australian newsletter many years ago.

Today, researching early uses of the stars on our armorials, particularly those of the Douglas Scotti, I stumbled across a couple of French 'blasons' with stars, one of which also had a…

Rudolph K Douglass - Is he known to anyone?

I received the following, which I have translated from French:

Comments: Hello,

I am contacting you, because, almost 200 years ago (July 16, 2021), Antoine Leclerc aka Milfort Tastanegy died on the property of friends in a small village in France, Villevallier (Yonne). He was born in Thin le Moutier (Ardennes-France).

In the meantime, this colorful character went to the USA for almost 20 years. He lived among the Creek Indians near Little Tennesse in Alabama, where…

John Stewart, 3rd Earl of Buchan and Constable of France

I have included this article on the strength of his marriage - and because I like his portrait.

The ultimare sacrifice - The Douglas Brothers

Andrew Douglas has just posed an excellent article on the sacrifice of one Australian family in World War 1.

George and Mary Douglas lived in Sydney, and they had four boys; Gordon, Allan, George and Angus and possibly three daughters; Georgina, Elsie and Gladys.

Andrew's first article tells the stoy of Allan.  …

Commemoration of life and death of Archie Douglas

His niece, Katharine Campbell reports:

Thought that you would like details of our commemoration today (16th October 2016) for Uncle Archie at Ration Farm Military Cemetery in northern France.  The ceremony was incredibly moving, though I don’t want to use clichés to describe it.  It was very touching without being mawkish or sentimental.  We had…

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
