Lord James Douglas - Otterburn Hall

Lord James Douglas was supposedly given Otterburn Hall in 1870 as recompense for the death of Lord James Douglas, who fought at the Battle of Otterburn, and was killed near Otterburn Tower (originally a castle), itself founded in 1086, and rebuilt in 1830.

The house, now in a state of disrepair is for sale.

But who is this 'Lord James Douglas'?

My branch of the Douglas family. Part 1.

Hello readers,

Well, after years of research and frustrating roadblocks I have finally pieced together my first article documenting my branch of the Douglas family. This is only part 1, I'm sure in time I'll add more to the story and what I'm documenting here has been a remarkable personal journey.

I hope for the reader you may find some take away advice if you're currently or planning to do research into your own family history. I am not a genealogical researcher by any…

The story of three brothers.

Recently I published an article on my wordpress blog to serve as a memorial page to three Australian Douglas brothers tragically killed in action in WWI.

Sadly I am unable to locate any surviving relatives.

You can find the page here.

Crocodile Hunter Malcolm Douglas Killed in Car Crash

Australian documentary maker Malcolm Douglas, known in the industry as the original crocodile hunter and the man who managed to match, if not surpass, TV documentary legend Steve Irwin was killed on Thursday at the Wilderness Wildlife Park in Broome, after the 4x4 he was driving hit a tree.

The body of the filmmaker was supposedly found caught in between the tree and his car, with the police ruling the death as accidental. The causes of the accident are however not clear at… Continue

Perthshire Douglas families

Whilst researching something entirely different, and as I was about to shut down and head for bed, I stumbled upon a family history that reminded me why I am not a pure genealogist!

Whilst we need their skills to help us find our roots, it is the history behind the names that I find fascinating.

The story records details of events that took place on a hillside visible from my bedroom window when I was a boy, and there were lots of familiar place names mentioned, so I did… Continue

Protesters being removed from Douglas estate

Tree-houses have been built, the tunnels dug, the barricades erected and the arm-locks secured to branches.

Mainshill Wood, in the Lanarkshire countryside, has become Scotland's new environmental battleground this morning as an army of bailiffs moved in to evict protesters against a huge opencast mine. Scottish Coal was last year given permission to extract 1.7 million tonnes of coal from the site located on Lord Home's Douglas estate. If it goes ahead, South Lanarkshire will become… Continue

Murray H. Douglas and Mount Douglas

Mount Douglas is a striking pyramidal peak in Antarctica, 1,750 m, near the head of Fry Glacier, on the divide between the Fry and Mawson Glaciers. The New Zealand Northern Survey Party of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1956-58) established a survey station on its summit in December 1957.

Mount Douglas is named for Murray H. Douglas, a member of the party.

Can anyone identify Murray Douglas?

Scot's £220,000 bequest to 20 towns called Douglas

A man has left about £220,000 in his will to towns across the world which share his Douglas surname.

Solicitors acting on behalf of Eric Gordon Douglas, from Edinburgh, have sent a cheque for £10,887.73 to Douglas Borough Council on the Isle of Man as part of the bequest.

But the council for the island's capital has appealed for more information on Mr Douglas in order to recognise his donation.

“Jesus was also a traveller” - Charlie Douglas

When I am asked 'Where do you come from?', I invariably open my response with 'My wife and I were both Gypsies'. Not very PC, perhaps, but it reflects the fact that we both spent the time before we maried in many diferent places, never spending enough time in any to call it home.

I never, in all the times I have had these discussions, imaginged that amongst the douglases there was some one who revelled in the title "King of the Gypsies", awarded him by his own Romany people for his… Continue

Lochleven Castle

LochLeven Castle

Standing on an island in a picturesque loch, Lochleven Castle consists of a small ruinous 15th century keep, rectangular in plan, standing at one corner of a 14th century courtyard.

The castle used to occupy most of the island, but the level of the loch has been lowered. Lochleven was a royal castle from 1257, and was stormed by William Wallace after being captured by the English.

The English besieged the castle in 1301, but it was… Continue

Curse of the Queensberrys

Tuesday August 4,2009, Daily Express

By Anna Pukas

Lord Milo Douglas who threw himself to his death from a tower block was the latest member of a troubled aristocratic family with a chequered history that has links to both Oscar Wilde and Osama Bin Laden

On a rainy night last month a 34-year-old charity worker named Milo Douglas climbed to the top of a block of council flats in central London and jumped off.

His body was found in front of Reading… Continue

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
