Hi William, yes this is our Hugh.  I think he fell on hard times or else he was up to no good already, and his wife Euphemia separated from him, He went to his relatives on the Isle of Skye by walking/getting lifts from passing carts. anyway He was arrested there for stealing a blanket of the community line and a spoon from a farmhouse, He had been to visit a relative earlier that day so something musn't have worked in his favour. he was found in the home of a Shepherd, I like to think he just borrowed the blanket for warmth and the spoon for his porridge, after he was arrested the family tried to help him escape, and he was violent to the guards even though he was 4 feet 9 inches tall according to his ticket of leave papers. So yes 7 years in Australia (it must have been horrendous) I would like to know what happened to Euphemia back in Glasgow she had been left to raise her children alone. Hugh was able to read and write. and was classed as a household servant on the convict log.

Hi William, Yes that is the same person,  he stole a blanket off the community line and a spoon from a farmhouse, he was found in the home of a shepherd, whereby he was taken to the gaol and the family tried to help him escape the reports have him as being extremely violent toward  the police when they took him his food. he was sent to Inverness where he was transported for 7 years to Australia.  He had separated from his wife Euphemia prior to this event. my initial search was to see whether John Black Douglas ever acknowledged his convict father, but it seems that he did as my GGrandfather Buchanan was born in the same area where Hugh had been sent as a convict. and Hugh was mentioned on the ships records for John Black Douglas as a farmer. the convict records state that Hugh was a House Servant.

Hi,

Yes this is one and the same John Black Douglas - he was married to Georgiana (also known as Georgina) Bennett in St Pancreas church london. they then immigrated to NSW where my Great Grandfather Buchanan Douglas was born, He had 2 sons one of which is Albert Douglas my Grandfather who then had 6 sons of which my Father Sidney Douglas is the eldest and I am the eldest of the next generation. I think coming from the UK to Maitland area in NSW in 1851 must have been like going to the moon.

Actually am using logic on this one - hopefully I am right. All the girls born to James and Frances Templeton McGarrah in Brentford, Middx and listed at Wesleyan Ministry in London are listed as being to James and Frances Templeton. Similarly all the daughters are listed on censuses as Templeton except Ruth BUT on birth certificate for Phoebe(only one born after compulsory registration in 1837), her death certificate, marriage certificate for younger Frances born 1818 and married 1856, and death certificates for older Frances and for James, name is given as Templeton McGarrah. So the only mention of a James and Frances Templeton outside of Brentford is IGI batch C116974 dated 22.9.1813 in Peniuik, Midlothian. Given that , according to other posts, there were Douglas in this area, maybe there is someone out there who can link these. I found the Douglas name for Frances' maiden name on Phoebe's birth certificate.

re Frances Douglas and James Templeton McGarrah (my 5x grandparents). There is a birth of James Templeton McGarrah to James and Frances in 1813 in Midlothian. This is before the many daughters were produced in Middlesex. Could these have been the same people. Any ideas please?

The only info I have is that Alexander Douglas married Christian Forbes in Cromarty in 1806.   They had 2 sons, Joseph, my great great grandfather who was born in Cousland, Midlothian in 1811, and John born 1809.   What is a macer?   Alexander Douglas is such a common name in these parts so finding more about him has drawn a blank.

Howdy William,

I am just starting to find out where my Douglas family comes from. I have read some about the Douglas Clan origins and find it extremely interesting. The only thing I know about my family is that my great grandfather was Fredrick Horace Douglas and my great grandmother was Cheta Douglas. They once owned a grocery store in about 1900 in Miami, Florida , sold it and moved to a small farm in High Springs, Florida. I haven't been able to find out any other family history yet.

Hi William, it is quite possible that John was a brother to William as according to the Archives in Prince Edward Island William left home with 6 other brothers who settled in Nova Scotia,(possibly Cape Breton area) though I have not found any other Douglases aboard the Lovely Nelly, they possibly came on another boat.  I have not been able to give William parents though possible his father was James.  This is my husband's maternal line so was able to come forward with no problem at all or backward.  if anyone can help me get back from William it would be very much appreciated as due to distance (appears to be a big puddle between here and there) I have to rely on the internet.

Well, that depends on who "they" are.  If "they" are my fellow hunters, yes, absolutely I hope they see me coming.  If "they" are elk or deer, I suppose I'd rather they not see me.  If "they" are bear, I hope we see each other coming!

thanks for this input William :-)

It was the Black Douglas (wasn't he sir James Douglas also?) I was referring to that he / we are descended from (see the pagefrom the book I've uploaded late last night titled  chapter V John Stuart Rust 1855 , then next page is the reference.

John Rust was a registra of Birth, Deaths and marriages and was in council etc.

Thank you William for your feedback.  The Battle of Otterburn video did take a lot of time to research and produce. It will depend on the number of requests from people as to what Video clip will be considered next.

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
