The Douglas Archives

A collection of historical and genalogical records

This information was compiled by a now deceased relative of my father. He claims to have retrieved it from the Carnegie Library of Lexington, KY.  I use his spellings as written and hope they are correct.

The earliest descendant mentioned is Edward Douglas, Kings Creek, North Hampton Co., Va in 1644.

Next is James Walter Douglas, 9th minister of the Briary Presbyterian Church of Richmond, VA.  Settled Jan. 1, 1728 and died Dec. 28, 1728.  He bought 1100 acres of land on the north side of the James River.  He was the teacher of Thomas Jefferson.  He gave all his land to his grandson, Thomas Meriwether.

S.E. Edwards, of Augustin Road, Edgloston Bermamham (Birmingham?), England, descendant of the Douglas family who fought for the Pretenders (?)

Col. Wm. Douglas came to Carllan, VA from Scotland about the middle of the 18th century and settled in London in 1770.  He was one of the justices of London.  He was high sheriff in 1780 and March court 1783.  His will was probated in 1783.  His property came from his father, Hugh Douglas of Garralland in Parish of Old Comnock, North Britain Co.

Hugh Douglas, was descended from  from many ancient and prominent families of Scotland, including the Humeses, Crawfords, Menzies and Campbells and was an Earl of Scotland,  He commanded a Brigade in Virginia in the War of 1812.  George, his son, was representative of Accomack Co., Virginia.

These are the oldest entries I have.  There are more that date the family to Kentucky as early as 1796, and includes much detail leading well into the 20th century.

Steven,  I have a family link that goes back to a William H. Douglass as being born in Kentucky in 1797 and married to Caty Cownover on 8/15/1822.  Her father was Levi Cownover (Conover), possibly Levi, Jr.  You say you have entries back to Kentucky in 1796.  Any William H.?

Hello Michael,

The earliest Douglas history I have puts the family in Virginia in the 1600's.  There is a James Douglas who lived in Clark County, KY in 1796 who had a brother, Nathan, in Washington County, KY.  They were sons of Hugh Douglas.  Reverend William Douglas came to Montgomery County, KY around 1815.  They are all from the original family of Hugh Douglas of Scotland.  James H. Douglas and wife Martha had 10 children born in Montgomery County. in the mid to late 1800's.

Unfortunately, I can find no link to the folks you have named.  Sorry.

Steve

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
