The Douglas Archives

A collection of historical and genalogical records

Following a request for information about Thomas Pringle b~1763 d 1848, who married 1787 Jean Douglas b~1763- d 1837 and had one surviving child - Euphemia, I noted my lack of knowledge on the Pringles. Some research was clearly needed!

A Pringle was a shield bearer for James Douglas at Otterburn, and links between the two families existed for generations afterwards. I have added an entry on the Pringles of Whitsome, but note links with other families as well.

A quick look in the Douglas Archives revealed only one entry for a Douglas with Pringle in his name, and he only had a two line entry, made several years ago! Using Google Books, I have uncovered more on this interesting naval officer - information that just was not so readily accessible a year or two ago. I had him listed as a Lieutenat in the Royal Navy, but he became a Captain, before retiring and contributing to agricultural improvements - and to banking. (Read more...) I will be adding to this biography.

Google Books programme of digitising the world's libraries may not impress the French - but it does impress me. Restrictions on copyright make some of the books unavailable in Scotland, which is a real frustration, so I welcome contributions from those elsewhere in the world.

Thomas Pringle - but I am not sure if it is the same Thomas Pringle.

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
