1860s Photograph Album Douglas Pennant family on ebay

1864 - 1870 Photograph Album of Ella and Archibald Douglas Pennant
330 albumen photographs

This is the photograph album of Lt Col Hon Archibald Charles Douglas Pennant and his wife Hon Harriet Ella Gifford.  It is inscribed Ella on the front cover and begins around 1864 (this is the first dated photograph), a year before Ella and Archibald's marriage, and runs through to C.1870.  Inside are over 330 albumen photographs of varying sizes, including very many named portrait photographs.  This would be a wonderful album to research.  With a quick scan through the album, I have found personal (and presumed previously unpublished) childhoold photos of a Victoria Cross winner - Edric Gifford, who won the Victoria Cross in the Ashanti war.  He entered the 83rd foot regiment in 1869, and there is a photo of Edric in the album at this time in uniform with an 83rd regiment cap.  Interrelated aristocratic families in the album include Fitzhardinge, Gifford, Douglas Pennant, Armytage, Trotter, Berkeley, Penrhyn, Speir, Chaplin, Robarts, and many others.  The album measures 9" by 10 1/2".  Three pages towards the rear of the album have had small areas cut out (not by me) but otherwise the album is intact and sound.

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
