I have a note of a John DOUGLAS, of Rothbury who on 9 August 1707 registered a will.

And also more recently:

• Henry Turnbull DOUGLAS (married ?) G Ellen THOMPSON 28 SEP 1922 Rothbury
Mr. Henry Turnbull Douglas, who was steward at Clennell Home Farm, died in the General Hospital, Newcastle, following an accident Dec 1953.  He was married to George Elen Thompson.

• John Wintrup married Anne Douglass in 1834, at age 24 Anne was born in about 1809, in Rothbury, Northumberland, England.
They had 6 children: George Wintrip, Mary Ann Wilson (born Wintrip) and 4 others.

• There appear to have been two young Richard Douglases in the 1841 census - a 15 year old shepherd and a 19 year old  who is a Male Servant in the Township of Warton, Rothbury district.  One of these may have been the Richard Douglas who received a sentence of hard labour for sheep stealing at Michaelmas Quarterly Sessions at Alnwick, 20 October 1880

• John Kirkup who married Mary Douglass @ Rothbury'1842.

• Apparently there are many Douglasses in the churchyard at Rothbury.

• The Will of William Douglas of Rothbury , Northumberland, Dated 30 March 1821 is Held by The National Archives, Kew

I can see no direct connection to your family, but perhaps there are some clues here to help further research.

Yours aye,

William

And now this:

George Frater married Susannah DOUGLAS on 22 Jun 1818 in North Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland. Susannah was born on 15 Mar 1799 in England. She died on 19 Aug 1874 in Wheeling, Belmont, Ohio, United States. She was buried on 23 Aug 1874 in United Cemetery of United Pres Church, Wheeling, Belmont, Ohio, US. Susannah emigrated 4 about 1818 from left UK to US. She emigrated on 23 Jun 1818 from US. They had 11 children. George was the son of Thomas Frater who married Isobella WEDDLE daughter of George WEDDLE and Mary CARNS

Could Susannah be a sister of your John William Douglass?

John had two brothers named Harry and William Ogilvy, and two sisters Dorothy and Virginia.

I have been to Rothbury, and the nearby village of Thropton, and I have seen Susannah's grave in the little cemetery there.

Thanks for that though!

I have just found these probate records listed as Durham

DPRI/3/1704/B202 8 November 1704 will bond, penal sum £60; George DOUGLASS, merchant, chapman, of Rothbury

PRI/3/1707/B113/1-2 22 August 1707 administration bond, penal sum £400; John DOUGLAS, of Rothbury

But still no connection.

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
