You are quite correct - but that is muddled when children of slaves whose father was a Douglas slave owner of overseer took, or were given, the Douglas surname.

Welcome to our community, Gordon.

You might consider the West Indies connection group, though i note there has not been much action for a while.  It needs shaking up!

My list of West Indies connections grows, and from time to time there are good breakthroughs as new information comes forward. Are you ancestors included? I was not able to find a Henry Charles, though I have notes on a couple of Charles Henry Douglases.

Yours aye,

William

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
