The Douglas Archives

A collection of historical and genalogical records

Hi folks,

While researching I've come across a couple of road blocks where I'm hoping the good folks here might be able to assist.

Sir James 'the Gross', 7th Earl of Douglas died on the 24th of March 1443, aged about 69. But what I can't find is 'how'? What ended his life?

Also, Sir William Douglas, 2nd Earl of Angus. He died in October 1437 aged about 39, but again, how did he die? I cannot find any information anywhere that provides any further detail.

So, if you're able to help or steer me in the right direction, I'd be delighted to hear from you. :)

James the Gross died at Abercorn, almost certainly of natural causes most probably connected with his obesity.  There is an amusing tale told by, I think, Nigel Tranter of his corpse being lowered into the vaults of St Bride's Church when the lead lined casket broke free from the pall bearers and crashed down into the vault.

William Douglas, 2nd Earl of Angus appears to have died in his bed. I have seen nothing that indicates what caused his death.

Ah, that answers another question, why was James called 'the Gross'. I was thinking it had to be something like that.

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
