The pilgrims, of all faiths and none, follow a route taken by a holy person in centuries long passed and visit holy places along the way. To be honest, and I feel I have to be when discussing religious matters, I did know a couple of them. It is an interesting format, with friendships developing, and then individuals falling out.

This series followed the route St. Columba took from Ireland, through the west highlands and islands of Scotland, and ended up on the sacred of Isle of Iona.

A few years ago, I spent the best part of a week on Iona, and found it to be a very spiritual place, thou, again being honest, I never discovered what it was I was hoping to find there. But I will share one tale.

My room mate, a Canadian, and I escaped to the local hotel of an evening where we sampled the Mull whiskeys. One stormy night, as we made our way back to our cell in the abbey we passed a small chapel with an open door and the candles inside flickering in the wind. I felt a calling to go in, but my companion had his head down into the weather and so I continued with him. I returned the next day, but the moment had gone.

But that is an aside from the purpose of this post.

Researching something quite different last night, I came across a reference to Temple Douglas, in Donegal, a place I had not heard of before. This morning, that was the subject of my research.

Temple Douglas: Tulach Dubhghlaise, Mound of the Dark Stream is the place where St. Columba was baptised, and probably where he received his early education.

There appears to be no family connection with the Douglases, just the Gaelic translation, though there is also a reference to 'Tobar Douglas holy well' about which I have not yet found anything.

If anyone can add detail to this item, I would be pleased to receive it.

I found Jean DOUGLAS b 1812 on a fragment of the 1821 census at Edenburt Co. Cavan. She was shown as the daughter of 30 yr old widow, Ann Douglas, along with her brothers Alexander (aged 6) Robert (aged 4) and John (aged 2).

Jane/Jean went to Whitehaven in Cumbria and John went to Liverpool, Lancashire. In 1836, Jane married Thomas BENNET at St Bees, Cumberland.

We know that he married a Jane Gay (daughter of Mathew Gay) who was also from the same town/area. He is my great (x6) grandfather. His children immigrated to New Zealand. Many of his descendants (some of which may be on here) have struggled to find any information on this man. We have been told that a fire destroyed records from this time, which could explain the dearth of information on him. We also know that there were many other Douglas families in Northern Ireland who also originated from Scotland.. so this could be a needle in a haystack type request. Anyway any information would be welcomed. Thank you !
A history of the Douglas family whose Ulster roots are from Lurgan, Co.
It has always been my intention to publish as a book and make it available for researchers to access. However, at around 900 pages, I have never had the resources to do that. Now, I have brought the files together with an index linked to the chapters.

I hope that this will prove useful to the many who are seeking their Irish ancestors, and I am most grateful to Mavis and Jennifer for their contribution to our understanding of the Douglas families in and from Ireland.
Charles Douglas of Dervocktag:douglashistory.ning.com,2019-04-17:3482022:Topic:927892019-04-17T15:43:29.653ZSusanna Elizabeth Bainhttps://douglashistory.ning.com/profile/SusannaElizabethbain

Lots of family tree descendants from Charles and wife Grace Gamble, but Church of Ireland (he was Bishop of Connor) indicates he also had three wives and I find no records of the other two. Did my Y-DNA and lots of Hamilton ancestors, but very few Douglas ancestors. None of the DNA Douglas matches have posted family trees or respond to emails. Hamilton DNA Project says that I'm an anomaly. Any ideas out there?
