In a 1633 letters Patent issued by King Charles 1 to Adam Bruce of Waltoun, living in France, a sort of testimonial to his nobility, the families of Bruce and Douglas are praised for their nobility, eminent fidelity & glorious deeds against the enemies of Scotland.
".........Lord James Douglas, comarchus of Drumlanrig, knight, in our county of Nithsdale, of which families by both sides have come all the noble and generous persons, most of whom during past ages have for their eminent fidelity and glorious deeds against the enemies of our kingdom been advanced by our ancestors of blessed memory kings of Scotland with great honours and high functions and knightly dignity. All of whom joined in lawful wedlock have up to this moment been illustrious by their splendid descent and have transmitted their honour and fame without blemish to their posterity........"
