James Graham, 1st Marquis of Montrose. When the National Covenant was agreed in February 1638 at the meeting at Greyfriars Church in Edinburgh, everyone present was expected to sign it, but they all also knew that as soon as they put their names to it, they were choosing a side that could end in their deaths. They held back in their fear, until James Graham stepped forward to grab to quill, and fearlessly ceremoniously scrolled his signature at the top of the parchment. You can still see that boldest of all signatures in St Giles' to this day.
