Macon Messenger (newspaper) 10 Aug 1843
    DIED.
In Sumpter county on the 12th ult., Mr Joseph Douglass, in the 75th year of his age.
He was a native of Mecklinburg county, N.C., and among the first settlers of Monroe county [Georgia.] He was the owner of the land on which the flourishing village of Culloden is situated, and erected the first cabin on the spot.
The next settler of the village was Wm. Culloden, an Irishman by birth, who had spent the prime of his life in India. He erected a small store house there, in the fall of 1823--and with these individuals, the rise and history of the place is closely identified.
Culloden died several years since, but his name is perpetuated by one of the most flourishing villages in the State, with a community of the highest moral character, and devoted to education and literacy improvement.
Mr. Douglass was a man of retentive memory, well read, and possessed an ample stock of general information. He was generous in his disposition, and of active industrious habits, and whose death will awaken a feeling of sorrow in many of the community with whom he was long associated.,

I am sure you are familiar with the excellent Georgia Douglases project, but if not, see here:  http://georgiadouglases.wixsite.com/genealogy/copy-of-a-f

    Hello Bill,

This is very interesting, indeed! I will review the information you referenced and reply back as soon as possible. I have come across George Washington Douglas's name several times in my research. Looking forward to learning about your wife's family, and sharing what information we have about my husband's family. !

I am very interested in locating more information about George Washington Douglas; specifically, I would love to know more about his mother. The information I have is that he was born from John's first marriage, and that his mother died, and John married Nancy Walden Denman (a widow); my husband is descended from John Douglas's second marriage.

Thank you for contacting me with this information.

I just reviewed John Douglas's bio on The Georgia Douglas site....according to Edgar Lamar Douglas's book "The John Douglass Family of Mississippi," published 1962 (of which my husband has a copy), John Douglas (1764-1839) was supposedly orphaned as a child when his father died while on business overseas, and his mother died shortly after his birth.

The book (incorrectly I believe) indicates that David Douglas was John's grandfather...I believe the records indicate David was actually John's uncle who took him under his wing possibly after his grandfather, William died (1773 in Rowan Co NC, source would be William Douglas's will from

I have tried to locate more information about David Douglas, but have been unable to do so. Also, I have been unable to find out where William Douglas and Mary came from before settling in Rowan County, NC. in Rowan County which lists David as a son and John as a grandson)

I apoligize...part of my last message was truncated. Should have read:

"...source would be William Douglas's will from Rowan County NC in 1773...)

    Hi Bill,

I am unable to view the information for Max Marshal Douglas on Ancestry. We canceled our subscription when we hit a wall in our research.

I am going to go to my local library and search in Mecklenburg County again. I stopped looking there because I couldn't connect any Douglases to my husband. However, I need to try and locate more information on George Washington Douglas; if you have any information you can share that will get my research going again, it would be greatly appreciated.

    Bill,

I am reading over the comments you left to William Jan 14. Can you tell me where you are comparing the DNA results? I am unable to find it. Thanks
