Which Douglas line are you researching? Dates and places help making connections.
Alexander Douglas (birth place and age unknown)where he is currently living at,in or of is too faded on the OPR married a Christian Campbell in Dorrery Jan 1774 Halkirk OPR 037/ 10 284 by being regularly proclaimed. Searching Scotland's People they had 4 kids Donald 1776 William 1780 Margaret 1791 Alexander 1793. Alexander Douglass b. March 1793 Toftingall, Watten, Caithness Married Annabella McKenzie 1814 Skelbo, Dornoch, Sutherland, Alexander was a Grieve at Embo from 1815-1820? and then became Manager to Sir Benjamin Dunbar of Hempriggs by 1823. Left Scotland 1840 with most of family, sailed to Ontario Canada before settling in Milwaukee, Wi. I have only read what someone wrote not an official source, that both Alex and Anabella died of cholera October 1852 in Milwaukee, Wi. Their 2 oldest boys James(1823) and Alexander(1827) had a very successful Architect and building business. Historic stories on a Milwaukee gov't site says James helped build the first Bridge in Milwaukee in the mid 1840's. Also had his own Architect style of houses that neighborhoods he built in around Milwaukee were referred to as "Douglasville"
Who is your earliest known Douglas ancestor?
Alexander Douglas 1793? Watten Caithness OPR 042/ 20 152
The Douglas families in Caithness are, mainly, settlers who were brought in from the Scottish Borders to look after the sheep once the glens had been 'cleared' of people. Thus, there is no common ancestor (in the Highlands).
There is no record of those who moved, so researching them is very difficult.
I don't pretend to understand DNA, but this seems like a role for profiling to seek out a common ancestor.
Meanwhile, I am still, very slowly, collecting data on the Douglas families of Caithness and hope that, one day, I may be able to connect more of the links in the chain.
If you enter 'Caithness' in the search box on this page (top right) you will find a number of others who are also seeking answers.

A search of the genealogy database reveals a number of Douglases who have Halkirk connection, but mostly later than the 1790s: http://www.douglashistory.co.uk/famgen/places-oneletter.php?psearch...
