Imigrated from Scotland at the end of the !800's or early 1900's to Chicago. He was born in 1871 0r 1872. Died in 1965 He settled in the to Oganagan Valley, Washington near Orville, Wa. My Fathers name was Robert B. Douglass. He was born in 1922 and died 1983 in Portland, Oregon.
I do not immediately recognise your grandfather's name - that is to say it is not in The Douglas Archives as far as I can ascertain. Hoever, I am sure someone out there will have him in their tree, and that with some networking, more about him will come to light.
There is no definitive answer to where the second s came from, but a widely held view is that many could not spell, and so the recording clerk spelt the name as he saw fit, and later generations followed the trend.
However, I note that two ss are more common in Ireland than Scotland.
