Which Douglas line are you researching? Dates and places help making connections.
We are trying to trace the ancestry of the Douglass family that lived in Mecklenburg, NC @ 1800. Joseph Douglass moved to the state of Georgia (@1827) and eventually settled in Monroe & Sumter counties. By early 1850's Marshal & Rebecca [Market] Douglas and their family migrated to Benton Co., Arkansas. Marshal became an Arkansas State Rep. & Senator. We are trying to find more information on his parents, Joseph & Hannah (McCleary) Douglas(s), his siblings and his parents and earlier ancestors. FamilyTreeDNA kit # 1014900 shows relationship with George Washington Douglass (1790-1852) and David Douglass (Jones Co., GA) but trying to link family connections.
Who is your earliest known Douglas ancestor?
Joseph Douglass (1768-1843) born in Mechlenburg Co., NC but who died in Sumter Co., GA.
Thanks so much Bill & Sue. Greatly appreciate the response. I am going to continue to dig. I would love to see anything you have on Ancestry you would be able to share. I have seen a few places where it states that John Douglass was his father, although no actual evidence of that. I have also gone through the Georgia Douglases web page as well. Thanks again for your help.
I am very new to this website, so please forgive if I don't have a complete profile set up yet. My name is Kathy Hilliard, and through being DNA Coordinator for the Snipes Family of America (and the FTDNA Snipes Y-DNA project), I am researching a connection between my 3g-grandfather Elem Snipes and the Douglas(s) lines. Specifically, the two male cousins in Elem's (and my) line are more closely related to Douglas men than to Snipes men (Elem's father is unknown). Their two closest DNA matches are brothers, descendants of George Washington Douglass (1790-1852). I exchanged emails in 2018 with Richard Martin Douglas, one brother who is now deceased, and haven't been able to contact his brother yet. Richard M Douglas had done most of the genealogy research in the family and was at the time beginning to use DNA to try to determine the father of George W Douglass.
I gather from looking at this helpful website that there are also some possible matches of the kits I am managing who were on here. I hope I could find out more about George Washington Douglass's ancestry, if anyone has made progress on that. Specifically, I see messages from Nancy Douglas and William (website creator) so far discussing George Washington Douglass, his possible father or grandfather, and questions about possible connection to John Douglas Family of Mississippi. Maybe I need to friend the two of you in order to share information?
Elem Snipes was probably born in Chatham County, NC, in 1810. From my DNA analysis of Y-DNA and autosomal DNA, I theorize that his father was of Douglass lineage, but he was born to a Snipes woman, given the Snipes surname and raised with some knowledge of Snipes ancestry, although he was assigned an apprenticeship at about age 8 in Chatham County. From the time estimates of the common ancestors between my cousins and the Douglas brothers, the NPE event may have occurred 1 or 2 generations above Elem, probably in North Carolina.
I can share names of the cousins whose kits I am managing on Family Tree DNA, and their matches as well, if it is helpful. The kit numbers are #161304 (now R-Z2123) and #152061 (R-M512). I would appreciate getting connected with those here who are also researching George Washington Douglass or his (possible) father, John Douglas, who ended up in Mississippi. Thank you for any help and advice you can give.

Bill, Is there a way for me to send the kit number privately? I doubt it’s an issue to post it ...but just in case...
I’ve had one spam post on this forum before
