Hi Lauraine, Buchanan is my GG father and he did live in Redfern and he had 9 brothers and sisters but I haven't found a Flora in my search.. There is an Isabel, but with the nickname thing that always went on she could have been called Flora...
I too have seen mention of an exhibition. John Black Douglas was a house painter and a Socialist, he also ran for the seat of East Sydney I am presuming for the Socialist party. I thought the exhibition may have referred to the Great Trade Exhibition in Sydney but the years don't seem to match up.
Hi Lauraine I have finally found the exhibition of which John Black Douglas was involved. It was the Wealth and Industrial Exhibition held in Sydney in December 1884. He and his friend George Brown were instrumental in creating this event and petitioning to have an exhibition of the industry which was happening in the Colonies. If you search Trove you will see reference to him. I am trying to find more on this subject. Now there was Art exhibited but as yet have not found J B Douglas mentioned in that. He did run for Parliament though and at one point received over 20% of the vote, he ran for the Eastern Sydney seat. Obviously a man who liked to get involved. There has been a letter signed by Geo to the Widow Douglas sent from 444 George Street Sydney which has been bothering me for quite a while, I now conclude that Geo is George Brown.
