Which Douglas line are you researching? Dates and places help making connections.
Robert Douglas 1562 who is my husband William Alexander Millar's direct ancestor 14 generations. Father of William Douglas 7th Earl of Morton.
I am trying to find the Scottish ancestor who killed someone in a duel and fled by sea wrapping his baby in a plaid which I still have. This person then came to Cape of Good Hope. I see there is someone in the line who is listed as having died in the Atlantic Ocean. I want to find out more, because perhaps he never died and is the link I am looking for.
I have not heard the story of the duel and the baby before, and you do not say when this might have taken place.
The last fatal duel in England took place some seven years later, on 19 October 1852, The last Scottish duel on Scottish soil took place in a field at Cardenbarns to the south of Cardenden on 2 August 1826.

So I guess, this story is from before that.
