I have it that William and Sarah (Kennedy) did indeed have at least two sons who went to America, where both died at Camden, South Carolina. The first was James Kennedy Douglas, born c1780, died c1860, naturalised 14 May, 1804, at Charleston, S.C. The other was William, born 18.09.1777, died 28.02.1810. Then there was their daughter, Margaret, born c1797, died 07.08.1821, at Camden. She married Charles Bullard, probably at Camden.
Their parents were William and Jean (McKie), and grandparents William and Sarah (McHarg).
Interesting you mentioning the possibility of Gilbert's parents being William and Mary (Wilson), and the possibility of a previous marriage to Isobel Kennedy.
I have a chart showing my understanding of this family which I shall be glad to forward to you via your own email address, if you care to forward that to me.

Bob has pointed out his own error: Charleston is in North Carolina, not South Carolina.
