    Sorry for the delay in welcoming you to our community, Eugene.

    if you search for 'Northumberland' (top right) you will find others who are researching family members who lived in the north of England.

    I have just added a story to the website about a Douglas raid into England, but I think any Douglases who remained behind may have met a sticky end rather than have settled and raised a family.

    Hi Eugene

    Noting your interest in Northumberland area, I've attached a listing of Douglas Baptisms & Marriage Bonds from Durham Records Online for those born in the period 1744-1748. There doesn't seem to be a pattern to the way that Surnames were spelt at that time. Most probably they were spelt the way the local church minister, official or notary decided on the day of the record. 

    Maybe later, when more people could read and write, individual families made a concious decision on how their surnames would be spelt.
