John Drysdale last I know in 1858 seen his brother James in the troops of Albert Sidney Johnstone just before the Civil War broke out while Johnstone was occupying Utah keeping an eye on the Mormons , after that , the trail goes cold , no information I have found so far concerning civil war involvement of this James Drysdale .

Something coincidental here , both Johnstone and the Drysdales shared a degree of Arnott lineage

' John Drysdale had learned the trade of a Charcoal burning, either in England or St. Louis, Missouri and made use of his knowledge, using the Cedar trees just north of Cedar Fort for that purpose.
One day as he was busily at work, he was approached by a sedate soldierly gentleman in the uniform of a general who proved to be none other that General Albert Sidney Johnston, commander of the Army unjustly and unwisely sent out by President Buchanan to subdue the Mormons. The army had entered Utah without any bloodshed through the cleverness and strategy of the Mormon men, with the aid of Colonel Thomas L. Kane, a good friend and mediator.

Peace was established and it was agreed that General Johnston might bring his army into Utah if he would establish his camp at least 40 miles from Salt Lake City. Cedar Valley was the place selected for their permanent camp, June 26, 1858, the camp being situated at the north end of the valley on a stream coming from North Canyon. It was at this time that General Johnston approached John Drysdale and asked his opinion of their camp. John informed the General that there was water in that stream only in the spring and early summer. the water drying up in August. He told him of the better springs near Fairfield and suggested that as a good place to make their camp. General Johnston acted on his suggestion and the place was named Camp Floyd, after the Secretary of War. The General told John Drysdale , he had a man named Drysdale in the army. John looked the man up and to his surprise found him to be his brother, James Drysdale ..''

Albert Sydney Johnstone it seems took up with the Confederate forces in Texas , in searching names lists , [which is rather exhausting] it seems for the most part Drysdale s didn't favor the cause of Robert E. Lee ...
still nothing in this area to connect to James .

A debutante presentation at court is a formal ceremony where young women of high social standing are introduced to the monarch or head of state. It marks their official entry into society and is often seen as a rite of passage.

The presentation is not necessarily made by the girl's mother and could be someone with a close connection to the King or Queen. In Carmen's case it is her mother - but who is she? And who was her father, James?

The tradition of debutante presentations originated in Europe during the 18th century and was later adopted by other countries, including the United States. In the past, debutante presentations were primarily reserved for the daughters of wealthy and aristocratic families, but today they are more inclusive and open to a wider range of young women.

Debutante presentations typically involve a series of events, including a ball, a dinner, and a formal presentation to the monarch or head of state. The young women wear elaborate gowns and are escorted by male escorts. The events are often highly publicized and attended by members of high society, celebrities, and other dignitaries.
Corps of Artillery Driverstag:douglashistory.ning.com,2024-02-17:3482022:BlogPost:1660932024-02-17T10:30:00.000ZWilliam Douglashttps://douglashistory.ning.com/profile/WilliamDouglas

This was reformed as the Corps of Gunner Drivers in 1801. In 1806 these became the Royal Artillery Drivers. In 1822 these were disbanded and from that date all men enlisted into the Royal Artillery as "Gunner and Driver"; until 1918, when they simply became Gunners. None of this applied to the Royal Horse Artillery, which had always had its own drivers.

• Major- Gen. Robert Douglas, who served with distinction in America during the Revolutionary War, was appointed Commandant of the Corps of Artillery Drivers on their establishment in 1795, and retained the appointment until the breaking up of the Corps. in 1817.

Here at Castledykes, with the rivers Nith and Criffle visible, can be seen Robert Bruce raising his standard at the Castle of Dumfries, freshly seized from its English garrison. Sir Roger Kirkpatrick of Closeburn with sword in hand, and Sir John Lindsay acclaim their leader.

Earlier on the same day, February the 10th 13O6, and at the other end of Dumfries within the Greyfriars' Monastery, Bruce had imperiously stabbed Sir John Comyn of Dalswinton, his rival claimant of the Scottish throne during a dispute while they conferred together.

Rushing out, Bruce, according to one account gasped in horror to his waiting friends Kirkpatrick and Lindsay: "I doubt I have slain the Red Comyn!" "You doubt? Teh I'll mak siccar!" retorted Kirkpatrick. Thereupon he and Lindsay rushed into the sanctuary and despatched the dying man where he lay in a pool of blood near the high altar.

In the annals of Dumfries, a day etched in history stands out—the day Robert Bruce, Earl of Carrick and Annandale, embraced the destiny thrust upon him, mirroring the gallant spirit of the martyred Wallace. Bruce's journey had been one of perilous choices—from a covert escape from the clutches of London's shadows to the refuge of Lochmaben Castle. He waged war against Edward I's forces, silenced a treacherous rival, and invoked the wrath of Comyn's allies, not to mention the formidable ire of the Pope. This day marked Bruce's inaugural strike for Scottish freedom and the coveted crown, binding Scotland's fate inexorably to his own.

Months later, the Royal Palace of Scone witnessed the culmination of Bruce's quest—he was crowned King of Scotland. Yet, the journey ahead held battles, and it wasn't until the resounding victory at Bannockburn that the crown securely graced his brow.

Dumfries Castle, with its motte and bailey, had a storied past, dating back to 1185 during William the Lion's reign. Wallace seized it in 1297, and during Edward I's occupation in 1300, significant fortifications were added, enhancing its formidable defensive features. Edward's focus then shifted to the south, fixating on the siege of Caerlaverock Castle.

Bruce, mindful of the town's needs, bestowed the common land at Kingholm to Dumfries. Around 1313, he dismantled Dumfries Castle, recorded as 'waste' in 1335. To fulfill the town's defensive requirements, the New Wark, akin to Closeburn Castle, emerged in what is now Queensbury Square.

For three centuries, Castledykes was the source of Dumfries' building sandstone. Today, it stands transformed into a nationally acclaimed public park, a testament to the passage of time. A monument and plaque at the original Royal Castle site serve as silent witnesses to history. Each Guid Nychburris Day, during the Riding of the Marches ceremony, the burgh's cornet unfolds the Scottish Royal Standard at Castledykes—a symbolic reminder of Bruce's monumental act in 1306.
Lord James Douglas - Otterburn Halltag:douglashistory.ning.com,2024-01-07:3482022:BlogPost:1652902024-01-07T21:36:40.000ZWilliam Douglashttps://douglashistory.ning.com/profile/WilliamDouglas

Scots-Irish. Dand Ellot son of Clementis Hobs (i.e. Clement Crozier's sister's son Robert Elliott, residence Gorrenberry, Scotland west of Hermitage Castle, his father was an Andrew (Dand) Elwald-Ellot, said to be in on the execution of a Hugh Douglas, but those Scott took him in up north. When he came to visit his son at Gorrenberry, chopped wood at night the family had to make-up a story about a Cowie helping out. Known as The Cowie of Gorrenberry.

My online research is still being scrutinized. When there was a feud between Horseleyhill and Hassendeen, Buccleuch from Mary Queen of Scots was the judge. There was a jury for the prosecution and one for the defense. Family of Stobs-Gorrenberry were of Horseleyhill, the defense, and it was good to have Douglas on the side of the defense. The Scotts were on the side of the prosecution. Can't say it was a Scot-Ellot feud though because a Scott on the Horsleyhill side lets say his head rolled.

James Douglas-Hamilton, Baron Selkirk of Douglas, died on 28th November 2023 at the age of 81.

The warmth of the tributes that accompanied the news reached across the political spectrum. All of them are genuine and none uttered out of dutiful respect.

The genuineness of affectionate words can be diluted on days like this; sometimes because those uttering them only knew the deceased fleetingly or out of convention that it is distasteful to speak indifferently of the dead.

The observations on James Douglas-Hamilton are testament to the esteem in which he was held. There was no need to issue warm words out of dutiful respect, these all came from the heart.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton was the second son of the fourteenth Duke of Hamilton. He served as the Member of Parliament for Edinburgh West from 1974 to 1997 and as a list MSP for the Lothians from 1999 to 2005.

His background was conventionally aristocratic. He was a page of honor at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.

Eton, was followed by Balliol College Oxford, where he was president of the Conservative Association and the Oxford Union. Rather more improbably, given his gentle manner, he was also a boxing blue.

He was elected for Edinburgh West in October 1974. He held the seat comfortably in the Thatcher victory of 1979.

After the 1979 triumph, he served in the Whips office before becoming parliamentary private secretary to Malcolm Rifkind.

The Scottish Conservatives bore the brunt of voter anger as Margaret Thatcher became the Lefts bete noire.

The job of neutralizing the venom fell first to George Younger.

But by the time Rifkind became Scottish secretary in 1986 it was something of a lost cause. Home rule demands intensified as the party struggled to shake off an anti-Scottish image.

James Douglas-Hamilton served as a junior Scottish Office minister from 1987 before being made a Minster of State for Home Affairs and Health in 1995.

He was a slave to good manners and when he was assigned a female driver as a minister, he insisted on opening the car door for her. Among civil servants of the time, he was known simply as The Gent.
Onward Brave Heart, Ælfwald I of Northumbriatag:douglashistory.ning.com,2023-11-27:3482022:BlogPost:1649822023-11-27T02:47:05.000ZMark Stephen Elliotthttps://douglashistory.ning.com/profile/MarkStephenElliott

Since I carry the Y-DNA, as a math-science computer instructor of FORTRAN and Microsoft BASIC first put on MITS Altair PC in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA. When doing your family history, if someone outside your family that does not carry the Y-DNA, tell you your incorrect they are not by their behavior genetic genealogists. The purchase owns the data from their DNA, when a firm denies access to your data which your paid for the results they receive as far as the scientific relevancy is concerned is irrelevant. You may want to kick out family by silencing. Science and genealogy is base on comments and sharing information. Not the best writer in the world, but computers, and genealogy handed down from dad are hobbies of mine.
Jacobus Douglas (illegitimate earl)tag:douglashistory.ning.com,2023-10-22:3482022:BlogPost:1646802023-10-22T11:21:53.000ZEllieElizahttps://douglashistory.ning.com/profile/EllieEliza

I am finding it all really interesting, but I want to make sure what my tree says is correct so I just wanted to put this information out there and see if anyone can help me confirm it. The first part of my family tree on ancestry is all correct and has marriage certificates to confirm so hoping it’s all legit, but going back that far you can never be sure. Any information would be much appreciated.Bothwellpark Housetag:douglashistory.ning.com,2023-10-19:3482022:BlogPost:1645252023-10-19T16:58:51.000ZWilliam Douglashttps://douglashistory.ning.com/profile/WilliamDouglas

The surname Randall appears strongly is Norfolk then somewhat Yorkshire. Finding Randall Douglas, of York County, VA. Names in locality which end in 'ton', seem to have Yorkshire origins. Basically surname distribution pattern for Douglas indicate Danish-Northumbria, with Scottish border dividing the north borders. For earlier than 1650 migration, this would be likely Yorkshire or East Anglican migration to Virginia. These people would be Anglican-Episcopalians, not Church of Scotland-Presbyterians. County Fermanagh would be Anglican, in Ulster, and likely why the name Randall is utilized for a Randall Ellot, in1630.
