The Douglas Archives

A collection of historical and genalogical records

In September I'll be in Scotland. Are there some places where all the Douglasses came from that would be significant places to visit?

Thanks William.  Unfortunately I can only trace my ancestors back to David Douglass, born in 1801 in Kentucky.  So I don't know where they came from in Scotland.

Key to that question, John, is where in Scotland did your earliest ancestor come from?

Places on my list would include the village of Douglas, in Lanarkshire where you will find the remains of Castle Dangerous (Douglas castle), St Bride's Church and the Douglas heritage Museum.

Not far from there is Drumlanrig Castle and Bothwell Castle.

This itinerary might give you some clues as to where to go: http://www.douglashistory.co.uk/history/articles/itinerary.htm ;

I have sent you a private message.

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
