A collection of historical and genalogical records

After the death of Thomas Teackle an inventory of his personal effects was made and the inventory of 329 books constituted the finest private library in America. These books were printed in English, Latin, Greek, and other languages. There were books on theology, medicine, history, etc. I knew he was favored by the Crown, and was recognized as an outstanding ecclesiastic and he was so honorable to his first wife, Isabella. That he was so erudite took me by surprise. The first college in America had been in existence at Harvard and William and William and Mary on the Middle Plantation. There were no other colleges available in America. When survival was so difficult it is so hard to imagine there was much time for studying the Classics.

I have presented four lines of descent from Lt Col Edward Douglas. I stopped with my great granffather, Washington Hunt. My grandfather was Reverend Henry Hunt of Capeville, Northampton Co., Virginia. He was captain of his class at Virginia A and  M College. Also he was a member of the first class of this school. Texas A and M Is now Virginia Tech located in Blacksburg Virginia. My grandfather also attended Randolph Macon College earning a masters degree. His first charge was at Lynchburg, Virginia. There was a book published that gave the names of early ministers of the Methodist Church. A short family tree was presented on each person. I was shocked to see the names of Rev Hunt's children but did not include my father, Henry Barraud Hunt. After a bit of exploring I discovered the survey was made before my father was born, My father was the youngest of four children of Rev Henry Hunt and Ida Elizabeth Tankard.

It so happens I descend from Martha Willett, sister of Captain William Willett. Martha married John Senior. I descend from this line by four lines. This makes a total of eight lines.

I have a number of Goffigon ancestors and every time I see this surname I think of the Goff and Gunn Clans. Is it possible this surname represents the marriage of two families?

I return to this 3 years later as Isabella Douglas, the Reverend's wife, and former wife of Lt. Col. Edward Douglas, Burgess, has come up in another context.

Do you believe that Isabella's father was Sir Thomas Dale?

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
