The Douglas Archives

A collection of historical and genalogical records

Hi all

I am not of Douglas descent (Wallace, Clarke, Davidson, Gordon, Stewart, Mactaggart and Davison families/clans to name a few of my ancestors) however I am interested in Border Reiver history as well as Border History so one must learn about the Douglas family. I have also been researching the first Countess of Morton, (Princess Johanna (Joan) Stewart) for a number of years as well as the Lord Dalkeiths and the earl of Angus (red Douglas) line for either graduate work or for a work of historical fiction.

I traveled to Scotland this past fall to explore the Borders and Dumfries/Galloway areas and visited a number of sites that are your gathering tour list and I thought I would share two blogs I did on these visits. I hope to join the gathering this spring/summer in Edinburgh on a number of tours as "Douglas-wanna-be".

Here are the links to my blog on Threave and Morton Castle. and when my broken hand heals I will be posting a wonderful visit on this trip I made to Aberdour Castle in Fife.

Morton, Threave and Aberdour are all on the tour lists for the Douglas Clan Gathering in July

I enjoyed Aberdour but the walk out to Threave was exceptional. The weather was not good and they had some damage so I didn't use the bell to call the caretaker and was told there was damage so they weren't letting people in that day but the walk to Threave was rainy and bracing but wonderful just the same. Morton is in a very quiet location and quite isolate where Aberdour is right in the community.

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
