The Douglas Archives

A collection of historical and genalogical records

Im looking for Douglas(s) in Wootton, Northamptonshire.

My ancestor Joseph Douglas left there and moved to Bradford, Yorkshire (between 1861 - 1870).

Joseph was born in Wootton, Northamptonshire in 1848. His father is Samuel Douglas born 1823, Wootton, and his father Joseph born 1800, Wootton.

I was surprised that my ancestor hadnt moved from Scotland, so Im wondering what they were doing in Wootton, all Ive discovered so far is that they built houses! I havent got any further back.

Has anyone got any ancestors from Wootton?

Thanks

A section on Northamptonshire has been added to the Douglas Archives: http://www.douglashistory.co.uk/history/Documents/Northamptonshire/...
I hope that this supports and helps those researching the ancestors from this county.
It was hoped that the research would lead to a solution for the ancestors of the elusive William Douglas, born 1610, but it has not done so. Yet.

Welcome to our network, Susan.

if you put Northamptonshire into the search box at the top of the page, you will find others searching in this county - most notably those seeking the ancestors of William Douglas, born 1610.

Other Northamptonshire relted Douglases can be found here: http://search.atomz.com/search/?sp-q=Northamptonshire&sp-a=sp10...

Yours aye,

William

Hi William

Hi Susan,

If you put the  name Joseph Douglas into FreeReg bp's you will find virtually all the men who come up are from the Easton Maudit Douglas family.  Wootton isn't very far from Easton Maudit so you might try to investigate any links between your Joseph b 1800 and the latest Joseph bp' at Easton Maudit in 1745 (who was a butcher) who may have been the Joseph who died in 1794, buried at EM.  What doesn't show up on FreeReg is that there was one Joseph in Chipping Warden bp 1759 and one bp'd at Bugbrooke 1724.  The Easton Maudit family seemed to go back there to have their children bp'd, or to marry or to be buried even when they had moved to other nearby villages.  At least until the late 1700s when they seem to have dispersed.  Do you have spouses names for Joseph, Samuel?

Betsey Howes

Hi Betsey

Thank you for replying, I hadnt thought of the FreeReg site.

Joseph born 1800, married a Mary Martin, (but Im not sure about that) in Wootton, 16 Dec 1823, I think I got that bit of information from the family search web site.

Samuel married Maria, but no maiden name, and no place, I just have the year 1845, but guessing it would of been in Wootton, as she is on the census' as been born there.

I will look further into the Easton Maudit families, I dont know the area at all, so I think I may need a quick geography lesson!

Hello Susan,

I, too am a 'Northamptonshire' Douglas. My paper trail leads back to George Douglas d1801 Culworth Northants. I have never been able to establish a link between Culworth, Easton Maudit, Wootton  etc Douglases. There were lots of different branches scattered over Northants. Interestingly, you say they were builders, do you think they were labourers or developers ? If you do come up with any connection to Culworth please let me know. George has proved to be a most stubborn brick wall !

Hi Nigel

I have just joined the Douglas Archives after seeing your post above. I have been researching the Douglas families in Byfield and Chipping Warden for some time now and I have just discovered Robert and Jutias Douglas who were buried in Byfiled which led me to this discussion.

This is my blog. My great grandfather Daniel John Douglas (b. 1849) boarded the "Duke of Westminister" in Nov 1885 and arrived in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia on the 11 Jan 1886 wife his wife Harriet ?.  His father was Daniel Douglas (occupation - shepherd) born 1820 in Byfield, Northamptonshire, England and mother Elizabeth Woodfield of Tysoe, Warwickshire. I believe his father was Daniel Wells Douglas born in Chipping Warden 1784 and died in Byfield in 1863, and mother Elizabeth ?. He had two brothers and one sister, George born 1814, Susanna born 1823 and John Douglas born 1829. I think that Daniel's father may have been George (b 1765) but I am not too sure. Do any of these people turn up in your family tree?

Cheers Cara

That would be great Nigel. I hope you enjoy your holiday!

Cara

I am not too sure with the Wells middle name it's only mentioned on his burial record not his death certificate. I thought his mother may have been Elizabeth Wells but she married another man. There is a Wells' family that live in the area.

1841 Census

And I found this article

1825

So I know they lived in Chipping Warden. Thank you for your help Nigel, much appreciated. I hope you had a nice holiday.

Cheers Cara

Hi Nigel

I have never thanked you for your help re my family tree. I was a little confused re Susanna Douglas a pauper but you are right i am pretty sure she is my 4th Great Grandmother. I found Daniel's birth records on FreeReg with help recently from my sister. I think I am now at a dead end, and will never know her parents.

Kind regard

Cara Douglas

Hi Nigel,

I'm Cara's sister. Nice to speak with you. Thank you so much for this information. I just told Cara, as she's missed your reply. We'll have to do a re-think... will keep looking, thanks again Nigel.
Cheers,

Kim

Hi Nigel, just found a birth reference in the England, Select Births and Christenings 1538-1975 for a Susanna Douglas b 1848 in Chipping Warden to William Douglas b 1706 and Elizabeth Goude b 1708. If I add Susanna to the family tree (ancestry) we have twelve children to William and Elizabeth including first son William b 1732 who died same year. Could this be our Susanna who had Daniel Wells Douglas b 1784? Do you have any information in regards to Susanna b 1848? Knowing she had him in Byfield, where her brother Robert and wife Julias moved to to have their family, is a good sign.

Hi Nigel.

As you can see from my post 'my' Douglas's trail goes cold with George in Culworth. The family that yourself and Cara are discussing (the one including Susanna) also have a George listed as third son, born 1827 in CW. Just wondered if you have any knowledge of what happened to the sons of George and Ann ?

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
