One of the tasks on my to-do list is to make a directory of all those in the Douglas family who were blacksmiths.

I have 'your' James here:  http://www.douglashistory.co.uk/history/jamesdouglas17.htm

Hello Michael and thanks for your note back in April.   Ok, so I can't get earlier than David Douglass born October 28,1801, married to Poly Chamberlain (born Feb 18, 1811).  Their son is John Fletcher Douglass, born March 17,1836, my direct ancestor as well.  According to my grandfather's geneological records prepared in the 1930's, David and Polly were married Feb 16, 1829 and online I see a certificate allowing them to marry issued Feb 14, 1829.  How can I get back further than David Douglass?   When I search I get a David Douglass married to a Mary a year or two later than my David, who has about 11 kids listed, one of whom is a John F. Douglass.  Very strange.  Thoughts anyone?

Hi Michael,

You are welcome! I do know that Elmore Douglass' father was born in Scotland...or so we think. I am on Ancestry. I will look and see what information I have on the family from Scotland and let you know.
Everything I posted was going by memory which is why I did not have many dates.

I will be back in touch soon!

Hi Michael,

Yes, I will be happy to provide the info I know. Captain Elmore Douglass was born in Culpepper VA in 1737 (as best I can remember). He left VA and moved to Fort Nashboro with his parents and several prominent Virginia families including the Blakemore family in the 1750’s. Fort Nashboro would later become Nashville, TN.
Elmore married Elizabeth “Betsy” Blakemore (also spelled Blackmore in some documents) and they settled in Sumner County, TN in Gallatine. Elmore built a home in Gallatine where the first court case for Tennesseewss held, Andrew Jackson frequently visited, and even the future King of France would dine with Elmore ad his family in 1797 during his 4 year visit to America.
Elmore and Betsty has several Children and I’m not if I am listing them all but they had:
-John Douglass who was killed by Indiana’s. He never married or had children.
-Burchette Douglass was part of the Whig party and was a prominent lawyer in TN. His wife was Martha McGee.
-Celia (sometimes spelled Cecila) married John Page. They had 14 children. They were my 4th Great Grandparents. Their son George Washington Page married Prudence Foley.
Their son WalterPage married Melinda Stonecipher. Their son Louis Page married Laura Webb. Their daughter Jennie married JC Manning. Their daughter Jan married Ronnie Esco/Escoe...and they had me!
Our family still owns the farm that was beside Celia and John Page’s farm outside of Nashville. The log house that was built around 1797 has been restored . George Washington Page and Prudence Foley were given the log house as a wedding gift from the Foley family.
Elmore also has a son named Ila that our family has always prounounced as “Ily”, a son named Edward Douglass II, and I believe they had a son named Jospeh.
I believe all of Elmore’s children died and are buried in TN in either Summer County or Smith County TN.
I hope this information will help you!

Welcome to our community, Michael.

I have a note of a William H Douglass, aged 53 in the 1850 census who was born in 1797.
Probably married to Catharine, born abt 1798 in Kentucky.
They were living in Montgomery, Owen, Indiana with their children:
Hugh D Douglass 15 1835
William F Douglass 12 1838

Is this your family? Do you have any more details?

William

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
