Drysdale is considered a sept of the Douglas clan, but it is quite likely that this was a separate family which existed previous to when the three Douglas brothers adopted the Drysdale name. A sept is a family that can be related to a clan or larger family for various reasons. Usually this came about either through marriage or by a small family seeking protection from a larger and more powerful neighbour.

Colonel Drysdale of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders had his portrait painted by Hermann Schmiechen (1855–1895).
It hangs in Dumbarton Castle, not a million miles from where I live.
I will try to visit when that is allowed to find out more.

The Admiralty yesterday [August 1950] issued the following statement:
"A small Royal Marine Commando Unit under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel D.B. Drysdale, R.M., is being formed for very early dispatch by air to the Far East for service in Korea. This is in addition to the Royal Marine Commando Brigade in Malaya, which
will continue operations. For reasons of operational security, it is not desirable to publicise the size and composition, or the times of departure and arrival of this unit."
Lieutenant-Colonel Drysdale, M.B.E., R.M., who is 33, joined the
battle cruiser Renown at the outbreak of war and subsequently served
as a Captain with 101 R.M. Brigade. In 1943 he was appointed

Hi. In the story of the creation of the Drysdale family, it is said that the 3 brothers took shelter beneath the Ochil Hills. The locations of Alva, Tillicoultry, and Dollar within the county of Clackmannan are situated consecutively from west to east beneath the Ochil Hills. The total number of Drysdales from census data in various locations within the counties of Clackmannan and Fife are described below.

After an extensive records search for people with the name Drysdale (before the year 1600) I've managed to come up with a fairly comprehensive list of just under one hundred people, mostly in Clackmannanshire and Fife, and, as far as I can tell, these represent the totality of the known Drysdale 'Clan' in that era - see picture below and attached pdf file:
and the pdf file:

Of course there must have been a number of other Drysdales living in Scotland during this period, but as yet, no reference or source material has been found to indicate their existence.

Scottish Heraldry and Thomas Drysdale, the Islay Herald
Sir David Lyndsay of the Mount (c.1486 – c.1555) was a Scottish knight, poet, and herald who gained the highest heraldic office of Lyon King of Arms.
In 1542, he produced a Scottish roll of arms known today as the Lindsay of the Mount Roll.
It contains 400 Scottish coats of arms, some of which were added later in the 16th century, and forms the basis of the official Scots heraldic registry in use today.
Another copy of the facsimile comprising accurate redrawing of his own drawings was published in Edinburgh in 1878.

James Drysdale, the trusted servant of William Douglas of Lochlevin, had a family
It would appear that James Drysdale, who was singled out for harsh words in a letter by Mary Queen of Scots in 1568/9 for saying he would like to put a sword to her heart, had a life outside Lochleven Castle.
The 18-4-1565 birth record of one Kirsten Drysdeill states:
"The 18th day James Drysdeill had a woman chyld born in fornication of Margaret Donaldson alias Whyt Wyndo baptizit and callit Kirsten." - Lochlevin in margin.
So he was a bit of a rascal in his private life also!

Some light reading, perhaps?
“Madam,” said old Dryfesdale the steward, “this much do I say for this silly page, that he could not be accessary to unlocking the doors, since I myself this night bolted him out of the castle. Whoever limned this night-piece, the lad's share in it seems to have been small.”
“Thou liest, Dryfesdale,” said the Lady, “and wouldst throw the blame on thy master's house, to save the worthless life of a gipsy boy.”
Extract from 'The Abbot', by Sir Walter Scott

Some further light reading about (Jasper Dryfesdale) James Drysdale & Mary Queen of Scots:
While Scott's 'The Abbott' was supposed to be a work of fiction (but based on historical fact) Henry Glassford Bell's account of James Drysdale in the 'Life of Mary Queen of Scots, Volume 2, published around the same time as The Abbott, was allegedly factual but appears to have been a highly opinionated & slightly malicious hit job (based on the paucity of evidence at his disposal)
.....Margaret Erskine, the Lady of Loch-Leven, and widow of Sir Robert Douglas, who fell at the battle of Pinkie one-and-twenty years before, was a woman of a proud temper and austere disposition. Soured by early disappointment, for, previous to her marriage with Sir Robert, she had been one of the rejected mistresses of James V., she chose to indulge her more malignant nature in continually exalting her illegitimate offspring the Earl of Murray above his lawful Queen, now her prisoner.
Her servants, of course, took their tone from their mistress; and there was one in particular, named James Drysdale, who held a place of some authority in her household, and who, having had some concern in the murder of Rizzio, and being a bigoted and unprincipled fanatic, entertained the most deadly hatred against Mary, and had been heard to declare, that it would give him pleasure to plunge a dagger into her heart’s blood. This savage probably succeeded in spreading similar sentiments among the other domestics; and thus the Queen’s very life seemed to hang upon the prejudices and caprices of menials........

Hi william,
Your link to the Clan Douglas Association of Australia newsletter of 1987 is quite interesting in that it reveals yet another slight variation to the 1503 story. In all I have found three CDAA newsletters with the 1503 story:
CDAA Newsletter 2 - 1987 - entitled Know your roots "The origin of Drysdale"
CDAA Newsletter 8 - 1989 - entitled Septs "The Drysdale Family"
CDAA Newsletter 87 - 2010 - entitled "THE ORIGIN OF DRYSDALE - A SEPT OF CLAN DOUGLAS" - this is an identical copy of that printed in Newsletter 2
The text in Newsletters 2 & 8 differs slightly and gives an indication as to why there are so many slightly different variants of this story:
Newsletter 2 says the story was copied by four people (presumably by hand) and then first printed in 1858 and again in the same form in 1863, 1941 and 1970
Newsletter 8 again says it was copied by four people (presumably by hand) and then printed in 1841, 1870, 1881, 1892 & 1938 (giving possible variations) and copied in 1987
Relevant text;
CDAA Newsletter 2 - 1987
Copied.......First by Simon Drysdale of the Haugh of Dollar in the vear 1620; by Robert Drysdale of Tillecoultry AD 1708, by John Drysdale, Dumfermline, 1835; by James Hogg Drysdale, Dunfermline 1858 and printed first in the year 1858 by John Drysdale, Montrose, again in same form by the last named John Drysdale of Glasgow 1863,and by Henry Dron Drysdale of Haddington in 1941, and lastly by Donald Douglas of Morven, Queensland, Australia in 1970......
CDAA Newsletter 8 - 1989
Copied .......first by Symon Drysdale of the Haugh of Dollar, 1620; by Robert Drysdale, Tillicoultry, 1708; by John Drysdale, Dunfermline, 1835; by James Drysdale, Dunfermline, 1838; printed by John Drysdale, Montrose, 1841; printed by William Drysdale, Alva, 1870; printed for Robert Drysdale, Tillicoultry, 1881; printed for David Drysdale, Warwick Lodge, Brixton, London, 1892; printed for Alexander Drysdale, Alloa, 1938; and copied by Neil M. Douglas Ewins in 1987 a descendant of David Drysdale, tailor in Sauchie, Clackmannanshire, and Janet McGregor
(married 5th January, 1800, Clackmannan)........
With regard to the Origins of the name Drysdale, you may be interested to note that I've just about finished modifying the Familysearch worldwide family tree to reflect the Dumfriesshire (Ingebald) origins of the Tillicoultry, Staffordshire and Yorkshire Drysdales (plus the odd Drysdale families cropping up in Annandale and England in 1500s) and the Douglas origins of the Drysdales in Dollar. The Ingebald and Douglas family lines lead (in theory) to the totality of the Drysdales that are found today - it's about a 50/50 split.
Based on my family lines in the 'Tree' I am related to Ingebald through the Tillicoultry Drysdales & I am also related to the Douglas Brothers though the Dollar Drysdales (James Drysdale of Lochleven fame was my 13th Great Grandfather!)
Best regards
