  • William Douglas

William Douglas was the son of Sir Archibald Douglas and Beatrice Lindsay, and nephew of "Sir James the Good". He was created Earl of Douglas on 26 January 1364.
Please note that his father was therefore not an earl; he was a knight.
The Earl of Douglas fathered an illegitimate son by his wife's sister-in-law, Margaret Stewart, widow of Thomas, Earl of Mar and Countess of Angus in her own right: George Douglas, inherited the estates of Angus from his mother and was later created Earl of Angus.

I have been researching Col Archibald Douglas, who supposedly married Harriet Ella Gifford, for some time. As you will know, there is some controversy around this man.
I have a theory that he might be the son of John Douglas, of Newcastle. See: http://www.douglashistory.co.uk/history/archibald_douglas6.htm Others have different theories.
Col Hon Sir William Douglas of Kelhead and Agnes Fawside did have a son, Col Archibald, and he did have a daughter. So, perhaps, your theory is correct.
I wonder if anyone else here is from this line?

Hello again William. Its been quite some time since we've made a correspondence and I wanted to check in with you. Have you been able to confirm my lineage to the Douglas Clan? I listed my genealogy in my profile below. Do you need me to complete any additional research to authenticate my connection to your clan? I appreciate your help with this very exciting possibility in my family tree. Thank you. Erin Hathaway
