Australian immigrants

We are looking for the ancestry of early immigrants to Australia.
  • Daryl John Douglass

Lots of info on William (george) Douglass after he unwillingly 'migrated' to Australia in 1804. The Cross-Flood foundation have two volumes on his children and their descendants (William Married Rose Flood in 1809, hence the connection)

    Hi there
    What about Immigrants to NZ?
William Douglas left Limavady, Londonderry and came to NZ in 1860 with 10 children on the 'Blue Jacket'. They stopped in Australia on the way, but settled north of Auckland, before moving to Tauranga and farming. He was instrumental in setting up the Presbyterian Church in Tauranga.
William's wife Rachel followed in 1863 on board 'Gertude'.
And his brother George Alexander in 1863 on 'Green Jacket'.
Then a niece and 2 or 3 nephews came on the 'India' in 1875.

My family descends from Richard William Glode Douglas who migrated (free settler) in 1853 aboard the Albermarle. He disembarked in Victoria but evenually settled in Qld, and was buried at Banana. There is a large tribe of his descendants in Australia.
He also has descendants in UK. His earliest knwn ancestor was Alexander Douglas who emigrated from Scotland to England in the entourage of King James in 1601.

    William,
This is another very god idea. Thank you.

What would you think of adding another column to your lists of Australian convicts and arrivals- ie a place to add the contact details of a known descendant of the convict or arrival. Contact details for the genealogist of the family would be very useful if someone recognises the ancestor.

  • Lyndon Todd Douglass

My great Grand father John James Douglass was born on 29/03/1859 in Sunderland, England. He died on 19/10/1928 in Ardrossan, South Australia, Australia.

He was married Margaret Jane Storey. They had 10 children, the last child to be born in England was Mary Storey Douglass born 06/11/1888 and the first child to be born in Australia was Jane Graham Douglass born 03/11/1890 in Ardrossan, South Australia, Australia.

I am interested as to when they arrived in Australia, where and how. Any help would be appreciated.
  • William Douglas

I thought it about time I added some detail to the Douglas Archives about the very early arrivals in New South Wales.

No sooner had I done so, than I received a copy of an 'essay' written by Carol Baxter entitled 'The Douglas Controversy'.

She writes: The Douglas Controversy deals with one such situation (uses of "circumstantial evidence"). The controversy centres around three fathers and two sons and raises the question of "who begat who". The three fathers were convicts who arrived in the colony in its early years: William Douglas on the Alexander in 1788, Thomas Douglas on the Canada in 1801 and William Douglas on the Coromandel in 1804. They were the only men in the colony with the surname Douglas who appear to have been fathering children prior to 1810. .... The two sons were born in the colony prior to 1810, ... Thomas Douglas and William Douglas.

A key finding is that William Douglas, arr 1788, married Mary Groves and only had one child, Elizabeth.

Answering Francene's question (below), it appears William, arr 1804, did have as his 11th child, Henry, b13 March 1835 in Pitt Town. He appears on his wife/partners.

Looks like lots more work is needed!

Hi, By way of introduction, my family and I arrived in Brisbane from Dublin, Ireland in 1994. My mother's grandfather, William Allen Douglas Russell, was born in Oct 1854 in Airdrie, Scotland. He was married to Elizabeth Cummings in Wallsend, NSW, date unknown. The family's surname used to be Allen-Douglas-Russell and today the eldest son is always named Allen Douglas Russell. I'd be interested in finding out if there is any other information known about this branch of the family.

Hi, My GGGGfather was transported from inverness to Dungog as a convict on the Hive in 1834.  His son who he had left behind in Lanarkshire Scotland was John Black Douglas who immigrated with wife and family to Sydney in 1851. His father is listed as a relative in the Colony on the ships records and my Great Grandfather Buchanan Douglas was born in Maitland. John Black Douglas lists his religion as Socialist on the ships records and ran for a parliamentary position in east sydney in 1888.  it is believed Hugh Douglas remarried although we aren't sure whether he actually divorced his first wife Euphemia black in scotland, but he didn't return to scotland after he obtained his ticket of leave.

My husband is a 5 x great grandson of Lady Janet Douglas of Glenbervie c1740, a descendant of the Douglases of Angus & the Black Douglases. Who are heavily connected to the royalty of Scotland & England & many others. Her daughter Janet Mackenzie married Rev John Snodgrass, they lived in Renfrewshire. They're daughter Margaret married Major Benjamin Sullivan, & moved to Portugal around the time of the Napoleonic wars where they had 3 children, including Margaret Isabella Sullivan. The Sullivan's arrived in Sydney in 1828, but immediately moved to Port Macquarie where the Major became Australia's 1st civil magistrate. By 1836 the family moved to Wollombi where the Major was also a magistrate, coroner etc. I would love to know how Margaret Isabella met a convict named John James Andrews,  but they married & had 7 children. He died within 8 years of the marriage. She never remarried. But in later years left Wollombi & followed some of her children to Northern NSW where she lived out her life. Her son Charles was my husbands great grandfather. This branch of the family became everyday folk of little means. I don't know if Margaret kept in contact with her well-to-do family after her marriage to a convict. Janet Mackenzie & Rev Snodgrass' son Colonel Kenneth Snodgrass also migrated to Australia from Portugal with his family. His son the Hon Peter Snodgrass was elected to the first Victorian Legislative Council. Peters daughter Janet Snodgrass married Sir William Clarke. She is associated with the creation of the Ashes Trophy.

  • William Douglas

Convict John Charles Douglas was born in 1819 at Shoreditch, London, England. He was the son of John Douglas and Ann Hacker. John Charles Douglas was baptized on 26 May 1822. He was (an unknown value) on 11 May 1840 at England. He arrived on the convict transport ship 'Lord Lyndoch' Hobart, Van Diemen's Land, Australia from Plymouth, England on 5 February 1841. He married Hannah Peacock, daughter of Edward Peacock and Catherine Peed, on 14 June 1862. They had 10 children. John Charles Douglas died on 6 February 1884 at Tasmania, Australia.

Does anyone have more information on this family?

  • William Douglas

Leslie Bernard (Toby) Barraclough (1922-1988), born on 30 June 1922 in Cunnamulla, Queensland, was a drover.

He was the 5th child of William Arthur Barraclough, labourer and bullock-cart driver, who came from Wilcannia, New South Wales, and his Queensland-born wife Florence Ethel, nee Reid. 'Toby' moved with his family to Cloncurry where his father worked in a copper mine. Leaving school at 12, he beagn droving at 18 and became head stockman at 23. In World War II he tried to enlist into the armed forces but was not accepted because his droving skills were considered important to the war effort.

He met Alma Douglas, a domestic, whose mother was Aboriginal, when they were both working in Corella Park station, near Cloncurry; she was 17 when they married on 15 October 1945 at Cloncurry Presbyterian Church.

    Who was Alma's father?

Hi  I have found a book called "The Battlers of Butchers Hill" in it there is a reference to Sam Douglas.  I have found him because I believe he is my Ancestor John Black Douglas' first son Hugh Samson Douglas named after his rogue Grandfather who was transported Hugh Douglas.  Hugh Samson Douglas or Sam would have been my Great Uncle brother to Buchanan Douglas.  Anyway, the story goes that they moved to a place called Maitland Downs in Queensland (Hugh Sholto Douglas lived in Maitland NSW and Buchanan was born in Maitland NSW and that is where John Black Douglas took his family when he arrived in Australia) Sam had one Son John Buchanan Douglas who while trying to cross a flooded river and save his half brother or friend (bit sketchy on that bit) drowned.  The story is that when at the homestead horses can be heard racing into the yard and stopping at the barn and the local legend is it's just the men bringing Johnny Douglas home.  Worth googling for a look at the extract re: John Douglas in that book.

  • William Douglas

    Thank you, Kim

It is stories like this that brings family history alive.

I was interested to find this: https://sites.google.com/site/kipioneers/first-8-ships/emma/henry-d...

Henry Douglas landed on KI on 3rd Oct 1836 off the "Emma" and with Wilkins (his man) and Mrs Wilkins they built a bush hut near the salt lakes. Wilkins was later employed in the garden the SA Company were making on KI. Henry became "Foreman of the Yard", his duty being to see that timber and cargo of incoming vessels was stacked and stowed and guarded at night. He left KI for the mainland four months later on the "John Renwick" to take up his land options there.

Who were the early arrivals in Queensland?

Robert Douglas, of Kangaroo Point, Brisbane arrived in 1836.  Was he the first?

Originally of Redbank Plains, squatter, and latterly Sergeant-at-Arms in the Legislative Assembly in Queensland, first settled in the Hunter River district of New South Wales, and subsequently in Queensland.

Who went on the make a significant impact on the history and heritage of Queensland?
Are these people, events and places marked in some way?

I am keen to make a section of the Douglas Archives, as I have for other states and counties, that acts as a central point for research for Douglas family historians.
I know that "Douglas! A Douglas!" and "Never Behind" by Mary Smith and Janet Shaw, originally published in 1986 and updated in 2000, contain an incredible amount of research and information, but I am not sure that they are still available.
I am looking for early photographs, stories and more and hope that you can help.
Perhaps the easiest way to contribute is by posting here, but you can also reach me through here>>>
