This is a wonderful pic and it is really great to know there are other relatives out there who have info on WMAD . This is very exciting!!
I wonder why he does not wear Douglas tartan?

Flavia, the usual answer to a name change question is 'money'! And it applies here. He took his mother's name by deed poll, 7th November 1877 when residing at Hurstpierpoint, Sussex on half pay from the Indian Army. - See more at: http://www.douglashistory.co.uk/famgen/getperson.php?personID=I1639...
This is my great great grandfather who married Julianna Catherine Spiller right? why he never use the Barnes surname?
Hi Lilian, I think I sent you an invitation to be a 'friend'. William suggested this and if you accept this then we will be able to use the messaging function to send each other info. If by some chance you have not received this invitation then could you send me one and I will accept it? Many thanks. Ben

It is him and my cousin copied this from family photographs . The family has his sword.
I will have to get your email as we have a lot of info.
Will get back to you ,thanks Lilian
PS You have a lot of relatives here and in Fiji.
Hi Lilian, I will send over what I have on the Barnes side at the weekend. I can add on a couple of generations there. WMAD is a little bit of a mystery to me as I have so little information on him but then his dying young may be the reason. Fascinated by the photo of him, so thanks for that! Is this from a book? I ask only because it looks a little grainy. Forgive my asking but I take it you are sure this is WMAD? Maybe his name was written at the bottom or on the back. I'll get back to you with the Barnes info! Kind regards
Ben
The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.
Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.
Professions also help.
'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.
Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
