Looking forward to your project. Glad to have been able to contribute to it a little.
No. I do not know the significance of these symbols offhand. I think the olive & palm may be fairly straightforward. The hand with vipers? My guess would be, that this has something to do with his interest & participation in alchemy, magic & the occult. Just a guess, as I have not looked into it yet.
Nice one!
Do you know the significance of a hand holding vipers surrounded by olive and a palm branch?
I will be adding this to my 'History of the House of Douglas in 100 Objects' project. Not that I have started it yet!
Quite a nice acquisition!
I note that this is held by the National Galleries of Scotland.
The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.
Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.
Professions also help.
'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.
Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
