The Douglas Archives

A collection of historical and genalogical records

I am doing some research for my family's website (www.willison.org). One of my decendants was known as Auchen The Droll. He was a grandson of John The Covenanter and the story goes that he was a great friend of one of the chiefs of the Douglas clan.

One evening he was visiting the chief in Douglas Castle and the chief gave him a bottle to take home. He put it in his pocket then, before mounting his horse outside, was seen filling a pocket on his jacket with pebbles. When the chief asked him the reason he said it was to give him balance due to the bottle on the other side. The chief took the hint and gave him a second bottle!

I am hoping that there will be archived records of the Willison family as tenants of the Douglas's which somebody might have access to. Does anybody have any suggestions or ideas?

Thanks in anticipation.

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
