The Douglas Archives

A collection of historical and genalogical records

I can’t call this post DNA progress, as this has beeen limited.

originally I took DNA test at Ancestry, I also uploaded to My Heritage, Gedmatch, and Family Tree DNA.

I hen also took a test at 23 and me who don’t allow uploads.

After a few years, there are a good number of matches, and these variably occur across quite a number of different branches.

I also uploaded to DNA painter.

The idea is you can identify which segments stem from particular ancestral couples.

some success here as well, though again no major breakthroughs

Next I took the Y DNA test.

Disappointingly no close matches.

one of the best matches had ancestry starting in Scotland, heading via Northern Ireland to USA.

This suggest not proves mt poosble Scottish ancestry.

Recently I upgrade my y DNA to big Y 700.

i now have a more precise terminal haplogroup R-BY46957

this is a subgroup of R M269

The hope was this would link me to an early group, but I suppose Y DNA is still increasing, so time may tell

Also I joined the Douglas DNA project.

so I would encourage more Douglases to join the DNA journey, join the Douglas project, the more people the greater the likelihood of finding connections

Hi Bob Ive taken a similar route as you with Ancestry Ged Match and Family Tree DNA .

I'm currently awaiting my Y DNA test results.

The only close relative I have found was on Ancestry an illegitimate second cousin, apart from many distant cousins.

I'm pretty sure  who I'm descended from I hope the Y DNA result will prove it.

Regards Andy

have you searched thew surname Douglas , and the area/s known that your ancestors come from ?
there maybe some a couple of generations different that now dont have the surname Douglas
but if you add their Douglas line floating to your tree, or start a mirror tree, just for Douglas DNA matches (with Douglas in their direct line) you will eventually merge ones that present same people
could lead you too Great grandparents further up the lines for you

Bob did you do autosomal also ? and get a gedmatch? (is that you on the facebook page?)

Yes I have done autosomal.

Both with ancestry and 23 and me, and uploaded to all possible sites.

mostly it confirms my known relations the closer ones are first and second cousins also first once and twice removed.

there are one or two in there clearly not related as people’s trees would have you believe, but they are related somehow

And gedmatch has been disappointing, relatively lower numbers of good matches, certainly not that many known matches

Hi Bob I now have my Y DNA test results but I'm unsure of the next steps I should be taking, However Ive noted that we  share the same Haplogroup R-M269

R-M269 is very common bob , you'd need to get an SNP pack or upgrade too BigYDNA test to get better results

Andrew

i did the online y dna course run by Diahan Southard. While informative, there are no major breakthroughs. Even the big y, which could indicate a deeper ancestry, has not produced a breakthrough

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
