The Douglas Archives

A collection of historical and genalogical records

I am trying to trace the baptism of James Douglas, watchmaker of Chertsey

The earliest record of him is the tax record of his apprenticeship of Richard Stedman of Godalming in 1747 for 7 years

I guess this makes him born around 1733 - perhaps plus or minus 3, and this record gives his father's name

Family myth said that one of the watchmakers came from Scotland but I have no way of knowing if this is true.

It is a bit of a forlorn hope, but I am looking for any James Douglass who went missing from his parents at that time

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
