The Douglas Archives

A collection of historical and genalogical records

Looking for further information on my distant relative who died at Charleston, South Carolina, on 9 Jan.,1799. He originated from Galloway, Scotland, possibly during the mid. 1700s. and was first cousin of Sir William Douglas (1745-1809), founder of the town Castle Douglas here in Galloway. Other Douglas first cousins were James (1748-1821) of Orchardton in Galloway, George d.1799 in New York and Samuel (1760-1824) of Cree and Cannock and of Netherlaw in Galloway. He had uncles William Douglas in U.S.A. and James in Virginia.
I understand Samuel was first in Savannah, Georgia, before being "obliged" to move to Jamaica.
Although I have a copy of Samuel's will, any info. of his time in the above places and of his voyage and arrival in Savannah would be of great interest to me and I would be pleased to share my further notes, should anyone wish.
Bob.

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
