This is a copy of a copy of a portrait, probably by dress around 1850's to 1880's. The shadows in the face are probably due to the copying and recopying...he was not dark skinned.

Alexander Vance Morton, b 4-11-1802, Loudoun, Ayrshire, Scotland. d 2-15-1885, Orleans Township, Ionia-Montcalm County, Michigan. Married 8-25-1838 to Mary Jane Grier (who came from Ireland), in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Mary was his second wife. They had four living children in Le Chute, Canada. Then moved about 1854-ish to Michigan.

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.
