HISTORICAL CRITICAL NEWS
The volume "Nobility of Genoa" is present in the National Gallery of Palazzo Spinola in two copies: the one in question is in loose sheets, while the other was bound and exhibited as part of the exhibition "Books and readings in the Spinola residence" . The two copies differ slightly from each other both in terms of their state of conservation - the loose sheet copy in fact suffered more damage from the fire that hit the building during the Second World War, particularly along the left side, where the gap is larger compared to the bound example, which also has similar burns in the same position - both relatively to the number of engravings that make up the series. In this sense, the comparison with another copy owned by the Marchesi Gropallo and published in V. Gropallo, L. Lenzi, "The Genoese patriciate and the noble families of Sarzana", Sarzana 1992, allows us to know which sheets are missing to the copies of Palazzo Spinola: in both the sixth sheet is missing, in which appears "San Giorgio and the dragon" engraved by Gerome David based on a design by Luciano Borzone, while in the bound copy the fourth page with the View of Genoa does not appear and, in the loose sheet copy, the Albergo Pallavicino. The documentary sources clarify the provenance of the bound copy from the inheritance of the Marquis Paolo Spinola to Giacomo Spinola, as indicated in G. Ruffini 1996, p. 66, while as regards the specimen in loose sheets, its identification can be hypothesized with the "Book of 28 hotels" which appears in a note dated 18 June 1870 of the "Income and particular expenses made by me M. Francesco Gaetano Spinola was James". The volume in question had been purchased for 22 lire

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
