MARGARET IS RECORDED IN MEDEVIAL RECORDS AS LADY MARGARET OF APOTSYDE AND HARWOOD ESTATES IN ROXBURGHSHIRE.
IN OTHER SOURCES SHE IS LISTED AS A DAUGHTER OF SIR WILLIAM TURNBALL AND HIS WIFE WAS ??? NO NAME GIVEN,BUT SHE(WILLIAMS WIFE) WAS SAID TO BE A DAUGHTER OF THE EARL OF DOUGLAS.
THIS WOULD BE IN LATE 1200"S/EARLY 1300"S.
WILLIAM AND THE DOUGLAS EARLS DAUGHTER HAD A SON SIR JAMES TURNBALL MARRIED TO MARY HALIBURTON.
MARY WAS A DAUGHTER OF SIR JOHN HALIBURTON WHO DIED IN 1355 AT BATTLE OF NESBIT MUIR.

My records show that Turnbull is a derivation of Tumbald, meaning 'Strong and Bold'; the name had never been recorded before 1315, when a charter granted William Turnebull estates in Philliphaugh, located on the Scottish/English border. So it seems we are talking about the 14th century. Always assuming, of course, that Turnebull, Turnbull or Turnball are interchangeable. Or Old English Trumbald or French Tumbald. This is what make tracing early Scottish names so difficult.
William Douglas (c. 1327–1384) was created (1st) Earl of Douglas on the 26th January 1358, and so this daughter of the Earl of Douglas should be his - but there is no known daughter, legitimate or otherwise, marrying a Turnbull.
At the 1st battle of Nisbet in 1355 John Halyburton of Dirleton was killed while helping Ramsay of Dalhousie, Dunbar of Dunbar castle and Douglas of Tantallon castle defeat the English garrison from Norham castle. Surprisingly, a few years later in 1363 Douglas and Dunbar turned on the Halyburtons and seized Dirleton castle in their first steps of rebellion against King David II of Scots for his attack on Kildrummy castle. This led to the battle of Lanark where Douglas and Dunbar were defeated by King David and forced to sue for peace. Dirleton was then returned to the Halyburtons.
