I have come across a couple of candidates for 'your' Alexander' but have not been able to find any more about them:

Sir Alexander Douglas (1572-1628)
Alexander Douglas of Mains (1570-1618)

Do either of these look promising? Do you have any further details that would help the search?

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.
