I am searching for the ancestors of William Douglas (1839-1893) born in Bridport, Dorset, England; died in Newark, Essex, New Jersey, USA. He married Eliza Jane Hopkins (1842-1889) of Meads End, New Forest, Swayze, England on 11 August 1865. They emigrated to Newark, NJ, USA arriving in New York 26 March 1867. By trade, he was a shoemaker.

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.
Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.
Professions also help.
'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.
Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?

Welcome to our group, Dolores.
I note your ancestors were associated with Rutherglen, and with the Lyons of Glamis.
There has been some confusion over which John Lyon has the Douglas connection, but we think we have it right in our database.
Today, I was working on Gardiner connections, but in Prince Edward Island - not New Jersey. These will not be ready to go online til later in the month. can you put dates on Thomas Albert Douglas? It helps make connections.
Yours aye,
William
