I contacted the person that runs the website given in the link below (Heather Angus) and with her input have managed to bring together a copy of Richard Angus' 1604 will with a full transcription and summary of the text:
Of interest to me in this will is the fact that Richard Duncan had at least one brother (Nathan) same father? - not a very 'Scottish' name at that time (ScotlandsPeople only records 2 Nathaniells before 1600) although occurring more frequently in Northumberland/Durham (15 Nathaniells bedfore 1600).
I suggest that the analysis done by Elsdon Watson - see link in previous post - (also a member of the Douglas Archives) is worthy of serious consideration and I think that his conclusion, is probably the best you can expect from the available evidence :
"The father of Richard and Alexander Angus is not Archibald Douglas the 6th Earl of Angus, he is one of the following, Archibald Angus, David Angus, William Angus or Anthony Angus"
I don't know whether this resolves the mystery to your satisfaction?
The website below has a lot of source references and some detailed analysis of the ancestry of Richard Angus c.1523. It looks like there is a lot of interest in this chap.
It has been assumed that Richard Angus went on to live in Dilston in Northumberland and died in 1604 - his will dated 25th December 1604 may be viewed here:
I would suggest that the quoted birth date of c.1523 is only an estimate and unless there is a definitive source for this date would treat it as a 'best guess' only & not enough to rule him out as a son of the Earl.
The reference to the Earl's exile - "Angus was charged with high treason in December and in March 1522 was sent practically a prisoner to France, whence he succeeded in escaping to London in 1524." (wikipedia) looks to be factual.
The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.
Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.
Professions also help.
'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.
Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
