A collection of historical and genalogical records
The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.
Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.
Professions also help.
'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.
Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?

Dear Jock,
You asked in a private message about the Douglas clan, or family, or house... I am responding here so that others can maybe join in the debate.
I explain about clans here: http://www.douglashistory.co.uk/history/clan/what_is_a_clan.htm but I do not debate whether 'The House of Douglas', or 'The Douglas family' is, or is not a clan there, though I have had the debate elsewhere.
There are those who feel that only Highlanders can be in clans, and this former Lord Lyon certainly refers to The House of Douglas - http://archive.org/stream/scotspeeragefoun04pauluoft#page/392/mode/2up when he 'nominates' Hamilton as the Chief.
However, modern terminology refers to the 'Douglas Clan', or 'Clan Douglas', and I am happy to accede. We are certainly on list of Official Clans and Families registered by the Court of the Lord Lyon.
