Profile Information

Which Douglas line are you researching? Dates and places help making connections.
I understand that our Scottish ancestor arrived in Jamaica in the mid 1830s, married a Jamaican woman named Bolt and had a son, John Bolt Douglas in 1940...my great grandfather.

Anne,

I note that Wilbert Lawson Douglas is also being researched by Celia Douglas.

It seems Who's Who in Jamaica no longer shows snippet views.

I guess you will either have to find it in a library, or get someone to do a look up for you.

My local library service does not stock it, or I would have a look.

Sadly that is all there was, however, an estate in Clarendon belonged to the Pennant family - subsequently Douglas-Pennant, details of which can be found in the West Indies Group.

Welcome to the Douglas Archives Community Network, Anne.

We have a number of people who are researching West Indian ancestors, and so you joining us has prompted me to start a group where discussion can take place.

I had not come across the name Bolt before (as a Douglas name), however, I note that a John Bolt Douglas features in Who's Who in Jamaica, c1945 (he was dead by then, I think) - but have not been able to find out more - yet! Could this be your great, great grandfather?

Google snippet: ...Born Grantham, Clarendon, April 23, 1873, son late John Bolt Douglas, Educator, and Frances Matilda, daughter James Wright his wife. Educated by private tuition. Elementary Schools and Howard University 1902-1905; started career as an ...

Yours aye,

William

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
