Profile Information

Which Douglas line are you researching? Dates and places help making connections.
Robert Douglas 1562 who is my husband William Alexander Millar's direct ancestor 14 generations. Father of William Douglas 7th Earl of Morton.
I am trying to find the Scottish ancestor who killed someone in a duel and fled by sea wrapping his baby in a plaid which I still have. This person then came to Cape of Good Hope. I see there is someone in the line who is listed as having died in the Atlantic Ocean. I want to find out more, because perhaps he never died and is the link I am looking for.
Who is your earliest known Douglas ancestor?
Robert Douglas 1562

Welcome to our group, Bernie.

I have not heard the story of the duel and the baby before, and you do not say when this might have taken place.

The last fatal duel in England took place some seven years later, on 19 October 1852,
The last Scottish duel on Scottish soil took place in a field at Cardenbarns to the south of Cardenden on 2 August 1826.

So I guess, this story is from before that.

My list of Douglases of Southern Africa can be found here:  http://www.douglashistory.co.uk/history/families/douglas_in_south_africa.html

Yours aye,

William

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
