Jones-Douglas Conundrum

Kia ora everyone, I've decided to post something here after hitting a bit of a wall in trying to untangle a bit of a confusion in my family's recordings of our history, and so I'm sharing it here on the off chance that someone might know something :)There's a story, in my family, which goes that my great grandfather grew up knowing himself as Walter Jones, until WW1 came around. He, born in 1901, was too young to participate, but attempted to join a local boys group (he lived in Middlesborough,…See More

Profile Information

Which Douglas line are you researching? Dates and places help making connections.
Generally I'm just curious about getting out there and seeing what there is, though I admittedly have more of a vested interest in ancestors I directly descend from. So perhaps anything of the Black Douglas/Queensberry line would be of most interest to me.

We have a family tree on ancestry (organised by my grandma, who has been researching this for over 50 years), though it gets more muddled the farther you go back. We have a fair bit of physical records as well, however I don't have frequent access to those.
Who is your earliest known Douglas ancestor?
James Douglas, 8th Laird of Drumlanrig ---> we descend from the 1st duke and likely the 2nd of Queensberry before diverging (family records of this time are a fair bit muddled)
Tags/keywords - used to help people find you
Queensberry, Black Douglas, New Zealand
dna haplotype
Maternal: K1a3a **this is not the Douglas side of the family. Paternal is unknown. My dad is planning on getting a DNA test sometime in the nearish future, so this may become known

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
