- We are trying to trace the ancestry of the Douglass family that lived in Mecklenburg, NC @ 1800. Joseph Douglass moved to the state of Georgia (@1827) and eventually settled in Monroe & Sumter counties. By early 1850's Marshal & Rebecca [Market] Douglas and their family migrated to Benton Co., Arkansas. Marshal became an Arkansas State Rep. & Senator. We are trying to find more information on his parents, Joseph & Hannah (McCleary) Douglas(s), his siblings and his parents and earlier ancestors. FamilyTreeDNA kit # 1014900 shows relationship with George Washington Douglass (1790-1852) and David Douglass (Jones Co., GA) but trying to link family connections.

Hi Bill,
My husband did the Y-DNA testing as well. He is on that chart, but not sure how it all ties together. I’m not sure which one is your wife’s brother, but my husband is in a different group than George Washington Douglas. I’d be interested to know if that’s because they descended from different wives of John Douglas?
I’m not really sure how to use the DNA information, but I hoped it would lead us to some answers we are seeking. Let me know if my husband’s test can help link more information together.

I am unable to view the information for Max Marshal Douglas on Ancestry. We canceled our subscription when we hit a wall in our research.
I am going to go to my local library and search in Mecklenburg County again. I stopped looking there because I couldn't connect any Douglases to my husband. However, I need to try and locate more information on George Washington Douglas; if you have any information you can share that will get my research going again, it would be greatly appreciated.

I just reviewed John Douglas's bio on The Georgia Douglas site....according to Edgar Lamar Douglas's book "The John Douglass Family of Mississippi," published 1962 (of which my husband has a copy), John Douglas (1764-1839) was supposedly orphaned as a child when his father died while on business overseas, and his mother died shortly after his birth.
The book (incorrectly I believe) indicates that David Douglas was John's grandfather...I believe the records indicate David was actually John's uncle who took him under his wing possibly after his grandfather, William died (1773 in Rowan Co NC, source would be William Douglas's will from
I have tried to locate more information about David Douglas, but have been unable to do so. Also, I have been unable to find out where William Douglas and Mary came from before settling in Rowan County, NC. in Rowan County which lists David as a son and John as a grandson)

This is very interesting, indeed! I will review the information you referenced and reply back as soon as possible. I have come across George Washington Douglas's name several times in my research. Looking forward to learning about your wife's family, and sharing what information we have about my husband's family. !
I am very interested in locating more information about George Washington Douglas; specifically, I would love to know more about his mother. The information I have is that he was born from John's first marriage, and that his mother died, and John married Nancy Walden Denman (a widow); my husband is descended from John Douglas's second marriage.
