Finding Samuel Douglass

I have received this email, and thought that it might be useful to share my response - in the hope that other researchers may be able to add to it.

I am having difficulty knowing where to go to find my ancestor Samuel Douglass. I have traced him to the 1730 immigration from Scotland with his father and son. I can not find where/who in Scotland he descended from.

Can you direct me to where I go on this site to find…

New search facility required

Atomz, who have provided the search function for the Douglas Archives for many years, appears to have  closed without warning.

I am replacing it.  The old dog is having to learn new tricks, so it may take a day or so to get it up and running across the website.

Recently joined member, Bob Henry, is offering to help with searches in south west Scotland, particularly in Wigtownshire and Kirkcudbrightshire - even perhaps Dumfriesshire.

Your profile

The key to networking is that you should be able to find people with similar interests - and that they should be able to find you.

Yes, of course I also searched under 'Ireland', but we must make it easy for others to find us. Places of birth or death, dates, names of spouses, maiden names - all these can help someone with like… Continue

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
