The Douglas Archives

A collection of historical and genalogical records

Hi everyone thanks for letting me join,

My family is the Douglas's of Caledonia, Queens county Nova Scotia , Canada my family lived there up until my dad when his mother was sick all the time with polio and arthritis and pretty much everything else and my Grampy had to move them to Bridgewater because there was no hospital there. I was wondering if anyone on here was related from Nova Scotia or related to the Nova Scotian Douglas's and if they knew what branch of the Douglas family we were from? My cousin just posted a family photo they have of Milton Foster Douglas on Facebook (which I made my avatar on here) and said he was my gggg grandfather and said his father was John Douglas who from what I can find (as long as it's the same guy haha) came over from Scotland in 1815 and was one of the seven settlers who founded Caledonia or seven hills as it was known then I guess it was 6 Scotsmen and an Irishman. Anyways thanks, cool site! I'm also really wanting to get a DNA test soon from ancestry.com or something but they're so friggin expensive my mom was adopted and I guess her dad was a priest from Ireland but there was a non disclosure agreement signed so she can't find a name but just think it would be interesting all around on both sides. Cheers,
Connor

Also I don't know much about those old ancestors but I was reading someone posted somewhere in reference to Caledonia and John and Milton Douglas that they were from roxburghshire in Scotland from something written in mil tons bible but I don't know who posted that if its true or whatever or if it's the same Milton to be honest I just don't know a lot about them my Grampy was pretty much just a practical hard working guy who as far as I can tell probably knew all this stuff but never really said anything about Scotland except we were from there a while back just really rural day to day guy his name was Ray Douglas he was an amazing storyteller the kind you don't find anymore but I never asked him about this stuff and I've been in Australia the last two years and sadly he passed away but my aunt Patricia knows a lot I'm sure so I'll ask her when I get back

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
